What is Cogeneration? Process in which electricity and heat are produced at the same time with a single fuel source. Cogeneration recovers the typically wasted heat that the generator produces and uses it elsewhere in the facility. Figure 1: Cogeneration System http://simonsboiler.com.au/product/cogeneration-combined-heat-power/

Uses of Cogeneration Cogeneration can be used in any facility that uses generators on site. Facilities that have a constant electrical and thermal need are the ones that benefit the most. Hospitals Nursing Homes Colleges Government Buildings Hotels

Positives & Negatives of Cogeneration Lower facility’s energy usage Environmentally friendly Negatives: Costs Equipment costs Maintenance costs Installation costs System size Figure 2: Estimated Carbon Dioxide Emissions Reduction, 2015 and 2030 International Energy Agency, 2009

Future for Cogeneration The future for cogeneration will continue to grow as more organizations find out just how cost effective the system can be. Russia is projected to continue to grow and be the highest user of cogeneration of the countries studied for this graph. Figure 3: SHP share of total electricity generation International Energy Agency, 2009

Conclusion Cogeneration systems capture the heat that is produced by a generator while it is producing electricity and uses this heat elsewhere in the facility. Cogeneration systems are a great addition to a facility that wants to save on energy costs and become more environmentally friendly.
