How to use the “other side” to help YOUR argument Counterarguments How to use the “other side” to help YOUR argument

Counterarguments A counterargument is when you ACKNOWLEDGE there is an alternate or opposing side to your argument. Ask yourself: How will readers who feel differently than me respond to this? What can I say to them to make my argument clearer? Explain WHY this opposing argument is NOT valid.

Counterarguments Imagine you are writing an essay about whether students should be allowed to have their cell phones in class. You are making the case that students should NOT bring their cell phones because the constant ringing of phones will be disruptive. Consider: How might students who are FOR cell phones respond to this? What would you say back to them?

Counterargument Example Your Detail: Cell phones will ring in class and cause classroom disruptions. Counterargument: Students are already “illegally” using cell phones in class, and they do not ring in class and cause disturbances. Your reply: While some students do bring cell phones to class, because they know it is not permitted, they are more careful. The problem of classroom disruptions will escalate if students are freely allowed to use their phones because they won’t feel like they’re doing anything wrong if it rings.

Counterargument Example #2 Your detail: Schools should allow students to use their own cell phones because the schools will never have enough money to buy every student a computer. Counterargument: Some students cannot afford cell phones, so this will not really solve the problem. Your response: Those that have them will be able to use them which will provide more access to computers for those who do not have cell phones.

Practice Write a paragraph explaining why students SHOULD or SHOULD NOT be allowed to use cell phones in class. Select one reason why cell phones should or should not be permitted. After you explain your reasoning, describe the counterargument. Then persuade your reader that the counterargument is not worthwhile.
