Welcome to SBI 3U! Grade 11 Biology

SBI 3U - Course Outline Unit 1 – Cellular Functions Unit 2 – Evolution (new)/ Diversity of Living Things Unit 3 – Genetic Processes Unit 4 – Animals: Structure & Function Unit 5 – Plants: Anatomy, Growth & Function

EXPECTATIONS RESPECT – others, yourself and the classroom. Be on time! Always be prepared with a pen, ruler, eraser, pencil and paper. Have a positive attitude!

MARK BREAKDOWN Knowledge - 38.5% Inquiry & Communication - 17.5% Making Connections - 14% Final Exam - 30%

KEYS TO DOMINATING BIO… Do your homework (duh!). Study hard for tests (double duh!). Ask for help if needed! Use the catch up binder to get caught up quickly after being away. Use this website to keep up to date: www.mrkeay.pbworks.com

BIOLOGY IS EVERYWHERE… July 2006 Floyd Land tests positive for synthetic testosterone Stripped of Tour de France Title July 2007…more riders thrown out for blood doping Landis is still fighting the 2006 ruling! Mmmm… I love testosterone!

GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS “GMO’s” Genetic material (DNA) has been unnaturally altered. Genes are added to a plant’s DNA which produce proteins conferring beneficial traits, such as herbicide tolerance (Round Up Ready) or insect protection (Bt) to the crop. Eg. 30% chicken breasts Lot’s of propaganda out there!

Missing in action May 2008 An indigenous tribe located on Brazilian/ Peruvian border Have never had contact with others Breathing on one of them could wipe out the tribe

INDONESIA’S LOST WORLD February 2006 Expedition finds dozens of exotic new species The remote area is “as close to the Garden of Eden as you’re going to find on Earth”

STEM CELL RESEARCH Nature’s master cells They can differentiate into specialized cells Hold enormous promise as the basis of new cures and treatments for diseases Very Controversial

STEM CELL INNOVATION 2008 – woman receives partial trachea transplant using her own stem cells

Climate Change considered by many scientists to be the most serious threat facing the world today. Kyoto Protocol an international agreement to cut greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change. Solutions: phasing out coal plants, expanding renewable energy sources and public transit; creating new efficiency standards for vehicles and buildings.

HIV/AIDS PANDEMIC World Health Organization (WHO) estimate that AIDS has killed more than 25 million people since it was first recognized on December 1, 1981, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in recorded history.

NEW THREATS Some scientists fear that the H1N1 influenza (“swine flu”) could become the next pandemic Already 100,000+ cases reported worldwide Need massive amounts of vaccine!

AND REMEMBER…
