Cantos VII Courtney Smith 10/20/07

In the 4th circle of Hell, demon Plutus, the cursed wolf, is introduced. As they enter the circle, Dante is shocked by what he sees. This is where the Avaricious and Prodigal are doomed for eternity.

The Avaricious and the Prodigal These were the people, that when on earth, were hoarders and no spending they did was done in measure. They were also not sensible with the gifts of Fortune. They were corrupt clergymen, popes and cardinals. They were known as the “ill givers and ill keepers”

The Avaricious and the Prodigal were forced to push weights in semi- circles for eternity, while in anger and in pain. They push until they run into the other group and they turn in the other direction, over and over again. This was a very torturous punishment.

Fortune She is sent by God to distribute goods between people and nations. The Avaricious and the Prodigal are punished because they cursed her when they lost there possessions.

The 5th circle This is surrounded by the muddy river, Styx. The wrathful and Sullen lie here covered in mud, as they fight with each other in anger and gurgle and choke on the muddy river.
