Life Cycle Assessment of MSWI residues: Recycling in road construction and landfilling Harpa Birgisdóttir

Long term leaching of heavy metals and salts are the environmental impacts that have to be quanitified for LCA. How much is leached? What is the time horizon for the leaching?

Leaching from residue and time horizon

Water movement within road constructions and landfills L/S-ratio can be related to the time frame for leaching in landfills and road constructions. Well established data on water movement in landfills were available while data for road constructions were missing. Drainage data were gathered from test road sections in Minnesota and a model was developed to estimate the LS-ratio in different parts of the road construction. A final version of the model is schedule for the end of 2004.
