Who nailed Jesus to the cross? Matthew 20:17-19

Matthew 20 17 Now Jesus was going up to Jerusalem. On the way, he took the Twelve aside and said to them, 18 “We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law.

Matthew 20  They will condemn him to death 19 and will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the third day he will be raised to life!”

Introduction Jesus knew he was going to die. Jesus chose to die.

John 10 17 The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.

Jesus could avoid his death There were times in the past when Jesus avoided arrest

John 7 6 Therefore Jesus told them, “My time is not yet here; for you any time will do. 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify that its works are evil. 8 You go to the festival. I am not going up to this festival, because my time has not yet fully come.”

John 7 9 After he had said this, he stayed in Galilee John 7 9 After he had said this, he stayed in Galilee. 10 However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went also, not publicly, but in secret. 11 Now at the festival the Jewish leaders were watching for Jesus and asking, “Where is he?”

Luke 13 31 At that time some Pharisees came to Jesus and said to him, “Leave this place and go somewhere else. Herod wants to kill you.”

Matthew 26 52 “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. 53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?

Jesus chose to die … during the Passover.

Jesus predicted the people who would kill him Matthew 20 18 “We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death

The Passion of the Christ – who nailed Jesus to the cross?

Jesus predicted the manner of his death Matthew 20 19 and will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified.

Who nailed Jesus to the cross? 1 Corinthians 5 21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Two substitutions Jesus died the death I should I have died; Jesus lived the life I should have lived. My death became his, and his life became mine.

The death of Jesus explains the sin problem: Guilt Judgment (condemnation and hell)

If we deny the need for hell, we deny the need for justice. If there is no hell, all existence becomes hell.

Addressing the guilt with sin or addressing the guilt without sin
