Stoichiometry Mass of Magnesium

Chemistry Name________________ Experiment Number #_____ Section_____Date_____ Mass of Magnesium Name(s) of Lab Partner(s)

Purpose: Write the balanced equation for the reaction of magnesium and hydrogen chloride Need to determine: What is the mole ratio of magnesium reacted to hydrogen gas produced? 1 mole = ______ g 1 mole = ______ L

Lab Safety

Procedure: Obtain a piece of magnesium, mass the magnesium Fill a eudiometer with water and practice inverting it in a beaker of water without forming an air bubble. Repeat if an air bubble forms Bring your eudiometer to teacher to obtain hydrogen chloride. Fill the eudiometer with hydrogen chloride to the top with water

Procedure (con) Invert the eudiometer without allowing an air bubble to form. Place the magnesium in the beaker and cover with the mouth of the eudiometer Allow the reaction to take place and measure the volume of hydrogen gas collected in the eudiometer Clean up the eudiometer

Data: Mass of Magnesium __________g Vol of HCl __________mL Vol of H2 gas __________mL

Calculations Mass of Mg calculated Percent Error

Conclusion: We found the mass of Mg by using the volume of H2 and performing stoichiometry. We found the mass of Mg to be ___________. The mass that we found on the balance was ___________. Our percent error was _______________. Two sources of error were _______________.
