Presentation transcript:

Celia Garth by Gwen Bristow Rebel, “a modern Southern woman writer complexly struggling to define her sense of cultural possibility in the face of the devastation, vision, and reform that characterized the United States through the 1930’s”( Lewis).

How is the plot familiar to you? Symbols Memories Patterns How is the plot familiar to you? With your partner, or by yourself, please fill out the plot diagram; don’t forget to discuss somewhere in the plot diagram at least one of the bulleted items above. I examine the plot: where I have seen this before? Do I recognize a theme, the lay-out of the story Everything is a symbol until proven otherwise. Sometimes we get hung up on all the details and don’t see the patterns

Questers! A quality story will always have a quester. In Celia Garth, there is more than one quester. Who are they? Please take the time to describe them either with your partner or by yourself. Quester is just a person who goes on a quest whether or not he knows it or not Someone tells the protagonist or the hero to go somewhere and do something

Questers! A Quest needs: en route lA quester lA place to go lA stated reason to go there lChallenges add trials en route lA real reason to go With your partner or by yourself, please answer the bulleted topics with one of the characters that you chose. If you want to do both, that would be helpful! Quester is just a person who goes on a quest whether or not he knows it or not Someone tells the protagonist or the hero to go somewhere and do something

What are they eating? Breaking bread together Religion Communion Please take the time with your partner or by yourself to find a scenario where there was food. What do you think was symbolic of the scene Nearly every religion has a liturgical or social ritual however not all communions are holy. Breaking bread together is an act of sharing and peace dinner, etc, writing a meal scene is also difficult and can be boring. So we the readers must examine what is going on during the meal, who is eating, what are they eating, etc.or is the meal canceled altogether

exploitation in many forms BOO! Surprise there are Ghosts and Vampires in Celia Garth! Don’t always have to appear in visible form, instead as symbols or experiences through other character involvement. exploitation in many forms A ghost will usually be a mental illness either in the character or in someone else...can’t be seen (abstract)...get it?! A vampire will usually be a person who is stealing something…(concrete)...get it?! Now see what you can do with your partner or by yourself? How many of the characters are ghosts or vampires? The ghosts and vampires are always more than just a ghost or a vampire Sometimes appear as the human…insanity, etc.

“There is no such thing as a wholly original work of literature” (Foster). Intertextuality: Look for old friends, ask the attendant question: now where have I seen her before? Stories grow out of other stories.

When in doubt it’s from Shakespeare To thine own self be true. All the world’s a stage. Double, double , toil and trouble; /Fire burn and cauldron bubble. Sounds smarter than quoting Tosh.O…for instance!

The Bible Connect the dots: Garden Serpent Plagues Flood Parting of waters Loaves Fishes Forty days Betrayal Denial Slavery Escape Fatted calves Milk Honey

Biblical References in Celia Garth Time Period Specific: Christianity was very important to the Colonists and the people in America during the Revolutionary Period. Gwen Bristow does an excellent job keeping time period specific. How many references can you find? If you want to go the extra mile, learning more, please take the time to research the references if you do not know them.
