Stretch and Challenge

What can you do to stretch and challenge our children?

T&L Hubs- The set up There are 5 calendared Teaching and Learning meetings this academic year. These involve all staff, grouped into hubs, cross curricular and cross phase who meet regarding a specific area of pedagogy – Stretch and challenge!! The idea behind this is that CPD is more valuable if concentrated on one area of specific practice that is revisited over a longer period of time. There is also the opportunity for staff to engage in action based research with their colleagues at SRS and also across partnership schools. You will work in your hub teams for the duration of the year to develop the focus area across the school.

Dates Hub Meeting One Monday 16th September 3.15pm-4.15pm WOW wk 22/9- 3/10 Hub Meeting Two Monday 11th November WOW wk 17/11- 28/11 Hub Meeting Three Monday 10th February WOW wk 16/2- 27/2 Hub Meeting Four Monday 21st April WOW wk 27/4- 8/5 Hub Meeting Five Monday 26th May WOW wk 1/5- 12/5

Stretch and Challenge aspirations… Class based - teacher driven challenge to a targeted group in class. Peer support sessions across phases – child ownership. Debating – developing speaking and oracy.

Before next time… In your pair decide when you will observe one another during WOW week, (22/9 - 3/10). Make it clear which group you are focusing your stretch and challenge on and decide how you will do this. Observe your peer and complete the observation proforma. Be prepared to feedback at our next meeting, (11/11).

Stretch & Challenge leaders So what does gifted mean anyway? (David Didau) Deliberately difficult focussing on learning rather than progress (David Didau) What’s deep learning and how do you do it? (David Didau) Gifted and Talented Provision A total philosophy (Tom Sherrington) Great Lessons 3: Challenge (Tom Sherrington) A focus on 'stretch and challenge' for all, not just the more able. Though some within these groups may like to take on the G&T specifically as an area of focus. How we identify them? Where it is recorded on a subject specific basis? What provision is available for them? Also the promotion of Higher Order Thinking and critical thinking skills
