Presentation transcript:

The Protestants believed:

The following were unacceptable: The absolute authority of the Pope Church services and the Bible in Latin The wealth of the Church and beautiful churches The idea of intercession and the central role of the priest Transubstantiation

Transubstantiation The belief that, at the moment of communion, the bread and wine are changed, literally, into the body and blood of Christ Taking the body and blood of Christ thus, for an instance transforms the worshipper. This is described as 'the mystery of faith' by Catholics Transubstantiation can only happen through the act of a priest who is in a state of Grace.

Protestants did not believe in transubstantiation. Some believed in Sacred Union which suggested that the bread and wine is united with the body and blood of Christ. Some believed in Consubstantiation which suggests that bread and wine and body and blood exist simultaneously in the same place in time and space Some believed that the act of Communion was purely symbolic. This was known as Memorialism.

Some Protestants believed in pre-destination This idea suggests that everything that happens was pre- destined to happen, and thus there is no free will involved, merely the illusion of free will. This version of Protestantism believed that the world was divided into those who were destined to be saved (The Elect) and those who were destined to be dammed (The Reprobate). They believed that there was nothing which could be done to change this - this was linked to the idea of 'justification by faith alone' which said it is a person's faith not what they do which saves them.

Protestantism was attractive because: To Kings and Princes it offered an opportunity to break from the power of Rome and control their national churches To people who feared their clergy might be corrupt the opportunity to find new priests To people who envied the wealth of the Church an opportunity to seize that wealth To people who wanted a seemingly more direct relationship with God the chance to read the Bible and to understand their services
