Page 76 Captivity Narrative Sept. 10

Building Background Mary Rowlandson created a new genre of American Literature, the Captivity Narrative. Was a Puritan-very religious, believed God was in control of everything. Her captivity takes place during King Philip’s War

King Philip Was really Native American chief Metacom His father had been Massasoit, one of the Native Americans that helped the first Colonists off of the Mayflower. Native Americans were rebelling about so much of their land being taken over as more and more colonists arrived. The execution of three of his tribesmen was the last straw, and led to an open war as they tried to overtake colonial towns.

Vocabulary Desolation Daunt Compassion Discern Lament

Literary Element Allusion-reference to a well-known character, place, or situation from history, music, art, or another literary work. Make note of Rowlandson's Biblical allusions.

Think as we read: How does the author adapt mentally, physically, and emotionally from the day of her capture, to the day of her release? How does her description of the Native Americans change throughout the story?

Biblical Allusion With a partner, find at least 5 examples of Rowlandson’s use of Biblical allusions. Write the allusion, and the page number.
