Datura By Elia Mejia 3rd block

Description / chemical make up All species of Datura are poisonous, especially its seeds and flowers. It has several species that are used in Brazil, India, and Peru to produce unconsciousness. It contains tropane alkaloids such as scopolamine and atropine.

Producing / Growing. Datura plants are easy to grow. They will grow out doors without too much special attention in many parts of the world. When the plants gets too big to bring inside at winter there are reports or people simply wrapping the upper part of the tree and pilling straw around the base to insulate.

Classification Magnoliopsida (Angel's trumpets) From the family of Solanaceae

Slang / street terms Devil's Snare Jimson Weed Devil's trumpet Thorn apple  Stinkweed Moonflower

How it's ingested The plant matter would be taken from the plant fresh and placed into boiling water for a long length of time. Many people then reduce the tea through evaporation. It could also eaten or smoked. There is also an ointment that can be made out of Datura called "Flying Ointment".

Similar drugs  Other drugs that similar are psilocybin (magic mushroom), DMT (dimethyltryptamine), and mescaline ( the peyote cactus). All of these drugs are forms of hallucinogens.

Medicinal use The paste of roasted leaves is applied over the area to relieve pain. It is used as herbal medicine. Its effective for the treatment of asthma, it can calm the respiratory tracts and prevent them from closing up and inducing coughing. One of the most beneficial health of Datura is that it helps improve your mood and reduce stress.

Psychological effects on the brain It can produce hallucinations, which the user is unable to identify as fantasy. The person will not be able to distinguish between reality and fantasy. He/She may become confused or scared. The result may cause memory loss and complete loss of motor/communication functions.

Physiological effects on the body The side-effects of Datura include severe anxiety, heart palpitations, vomiting and the inability to urinate. (large doses of Datura could lead to death).

Duration of effects The effect can last anything from 8 to 18 hours, but there have been reports that it could last for several days.

Dependence People need a stronger effect or new ways to smoke. Some use it to cure their asthma.

Myths Datura may look like a beautiful plant. It makes people think that it's a harmless flower that you just want to go up to and smell, but it's one of the worlds most dangerous drugs that is filled with the devil's breathe.
