Scatter Plots 8.M.SP.01 I can create and interpret scatter plots and find associations between two quantities.

Day 1 - Scatter Plots Describing the correlation that exists between two variables displayed on a scatter plot.

Vocabulary scatter plot correlation line of best fit outlier cluster

What is a Scatter Plot? Scatter plots are a type of graph that shows if two variables are related. Scatter plots show how much one variable is affected by another.

Correlation Scatter plots show if two variables have a relationship. The correlation describes the type of relationship: Positive - as one variable increases, the other variable increases Negative - as one variable decreases, the other variable increases. None - the variables have no relationship

Correlation Practice Tell whether the data have a positive, negative or no correlation.

Correlation Example The data shows the height and weight of members of a basketball team. Does the scatter plot show a relationship between height and weight?

Correlation Practice For each scatter plot, describe any relationship that exists between the variables.

Correlation Practice For each scatter plot, describe any relationship that exists between the variables.

Closure What do you think the relationship would be between the following variables? The speed of a runner and the number of races she wins. The size of a car or truck and the number of miles per gallon of gasoline it can travel. The number of telephones you own and the number of calls you receive.

Making predictions using line of best fit. Day 2 - Scatter Plots Making predictions using line of best fit.

How do we make predictions using scatter plots? Draw a line of best fit A line of best fit is a straight line that best represents the data on a scatter plot.  How many visitors would we expect to visit the beach when the temperature is 90 degrees?

Line of Best Fit The line of best fit is the line that comes closest to all the points on a scatter plot. One way to estimate the line of best fit is to lay a ruler’s edge over the graph and adjust it until it looks closest to all the points.

Line of Best Fit - Example What would you expect the weight to be of a player who is 72 inches tall?

Line of Best Fit - Practice 1) Circle the point that represents the student who spent twice as long watching tv as they did on homework. 2) If Jocelyn spent 210 minutes watching tv, how much time did she probably spend on homework?

Line of Best Fit - Practice What would you predict vehicle sales to be in the year 2000?

Shake It Up Scatter Plots Class Activity

Describing features of a scatter plot: clustering and outliers Day 3 - Scatter Plots Describing features of a scatter plot: clustering and outliers

What does this cluster show? When the data can be grouped in a way to show a relationship, it is said to have a cluster. What does this cluster show?

This point is an outlier. When a point of data does not fit into the cluster, it is called an outlier. This point is an outlier.

Example Does the scatter plot show a cluster? Do you see any possible outliers? What could the outliers mean?

Practice Does the scatter plot show any clusters? Do you see any possible outliers? What could the outliers mean?
