Focus Notes: Copy these terms… UNIT 1: FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE (LITERARY DEVICES) Measured by: Focus Notes, quiz, discussion, project, presentation & usage allusion A reference to a historical event, person, object, etc. (most are biblical or mythological references) 2. ambiguity A subtle hint or fact left intentionally unclear; vague 3. analogy Comparing/describing one concept with another similar object or story – an illustration, similar example 4. apostrophe an arrangement of words addressing a non-existent person or an abstract idea in such a way as if it were present and capable of understanding feelings 5. character a person in a work of fiction 6. characterization the creation or construction of a fictional character.
