Enlightenment An intellectual 18th-century movement that sought to apply scientific methods to the study of society and government.

philosophe Any of the popular French intellectuals or social philosophers of the 18th century, as Diderot, Rousseau, or Voltaire. Philosopher: a person who offers views or theories on profound questions in ethics, metaphysics, logic, and other related fields.

natural rights Rights that belong to people “by nature,” simply because they are human beings.
