Neighborhood Area Networks Proposal to 802.15 TG4g Neighborhood Area Networks May 2, 2009 IEEE 802.15 David Hart, Elster Electricity

Scope/Goals of TG4g Define an alternate PHY layer for 802.15.4 with only those MAC modifications needed to support the PHY layer implementation Support operation in any of the regionally available license exempt frequency bands, such as 700MHz to 1GHz, and the 2.4 GHz band Data rate of at least 40 kbps but not more than 1000 kbps Achieve the optimal energy efficient link margin given the environmental conditions encountered in Smart Metering deployments Principally outdoor communications PHY frame sizes up to a minimum of 1500 octets Simultaneous operation for at least 3 co-located orthogonal networks Connectivity to at least one thousand direct neighbors characteristic of dense urban deployments Provide mechanisms that enable coexistence with other systems in the same band(s) including IEEE 802.11, 802.15 and 802.16 systems David Hart, Elster Electricity

Proposal to Address Goals of TG4g Define an alternate PHY layer for 802.15.4 with only those MAC modifications needed to support the PHY layer implementation Overview of Proposed PHY Layer FSK modulation 400 kHz channel spacing to support higher data rates Programmable output power (to suit various device types) Supports data rates of 60 and 240 kbps David Hart, Elster Electricity

Proposal to Address Goals of TG4g Support operation in any of the regionally available license exempt frequency bands, such as 700MHz to 1GHz, and the 2.4 GHz band Proposal supports operation in 868 MHz, 915 MHz, and 2.4 GHz bands David Hart, Elster Electricity

Proposal to Address Goals of TG4g Data rate of at least 40 kbps but not more than 1000 kbps Proposed PHY Layer Supports data rates of 60 and 240 kbps Data rate allowed to vary based on device type and number of desired channels Provides a low data rate for simple low end devices, while also providing a higher data rate for large data/message transport David Hart, Elster Electricity

Proposal to Address Goals of TG4g Achieve the optimal energy efficient link margin given the environmental conditions encountered in Smart Metering deployments Proven operation in outdoor environments Proven operation with all types of smart meters (electric, gas, water, etc) Proven communications bridge to in-home devices Supports communications from outdoor devices into the home Both single family residential and multi-unit structures (e.g. apartment complexes) David Hart, Elster Electricity

Proposal to Address Goals of TG4g Principally outdoor communications Communication backbone is principally outdoors, BUT it is critical to get from the meter into the home Must get from outdoor devices into the home Must support multi-home dwellings David Hart, Elster Electricity

Proposal to Address Goals of TG4g PHY frame sizes up to a minimum of 1500 octets Simple PHY frame structure Variable frame size up to 4095 octet PHY payload (PSDU) Support for very large payloads Data whitening performed as software algorithm – no PHY space required for whitening David Hart, Elster Electricity

Proposal to Address Goals of TG4g Simultaneous operation for at least 3 co-located orthogonal networks In 915 MHz band: 64 channels available for standard operation (240 kbps) 128 channels available for low data rate mode (60 kbps) In 2.4 GHz band: 207 channels available for standard operation (240 kbps) 414 channels available for low data rate mode (60 kbps) David Hart, Elster Electricity

Proposal to Address Goals of TG4g Connectivity to at least one thousand direct neighbors characteristic of dense urban deployments FHSS approach provides the functionality to meet these requirements David Hart, Elster Electricity

Proposal to Address Goals of TG4g Provide mechanisms that enable coexistence with other systems in the same band(s) including IEEE 801.11, 802.15, and 802.16 FHSS channel planning provides for coexistence Proven network performance in the presence of commonly encountered interference sources Applicable to the 868 MHz, 915 MHz, and 2.4 GHz frequency bands David Hart, Elster Electricity

Proposal for TG4g Items that are critical for a FHSS amendment Data rate must provide for today’s needs but also provide for increased data needs in the future PHY must support a high data rate similar to what 802.15.4 allows today (250 kbps) PHY must allow for a slower data rate for simple or power constrained devices David Hart, Elster Electricity

Proposal for TG4g Items that are critical for a FHSS amendment Must support different types of devices Powered or “always on” devices Battery powered, or “sleeping” devices Standard should not be limited to utility networks, but for utility networks, it must handle: Electric Gas (battery powered) Water (battery powered) Networks must function from same communication platform Not acceptable to just co-exist Electric, water, and gas must be interoperable David Hart, Elster Electricity

Thank you!!             David Hart, Elster Electricity
