Look at the city’s population numbers Questions: What are some reasons people start communities? What are some reasons that a city like San Francisco might grow so much? * Use “resources, population, and need” to help answer the questions.

First Draft Example: First draft of a biography on Abraham Lincoln (using sequence chart from yesterday) Model: In the beginning, I’ll introduce Lincoln and tell about his early life. Abraham Lincoln was born in a log cabin in 1809. As a boy, he loved to read. When he became an adult, he worked at a mill, and a post office. Then he became a lawyer. cont…

First Draft cont… Ask students to add details following the sequence of his life. In 1860 people voted for Lincoln and he became the sixteenth President of the United States. The Civil War began in 1861. It started partly because Lincoln wanted to end slavery. States in the South did not agree with Lincoln. Those states wanted to break away. Lincoln wanted to keep the country together. In 1863 Lincoln ended slavery. The Civil War ended in 1865. Students help write the conclusion.
