Observations. Definitions  Observation: what we perceive using our 5 senses (hear, touch, taste, smell, see)  Perception: interpreting information received.
Your Point of View Examine the picture on the next slide for 10 seconds. What do you see?
Observation vs. Inference An observation is actually what we perceive using our senses - touch, smell, sound, sight – in chemistry, we never use taste.

Presentation transcript:

SENSATION AND PERCEPTION Method – 1 - Slide will go up on the screen. 2 - In your groups make sure students silently consider what they are seeing. 3 – Calmly, after about 30 seconds they can share what they saw. Make sure they are speaking one at a time! 4 - Ask them what prior knowledge or experience might have helped them come to their conclusions. Good job!!!!

What is Sensation? Sensation is the process that activates our sense receptors and enables them to transmit signals to the brain. What are our senses? Sight Hearing Smell Touch Taste

What is Perception? Perception is the process that allows us to select, organize and interpret sensory signals from the brain. The brain organizes and makes sense of the information.

What do you see? How many legs does the elephant have? How does our experience influence our perception of this image? What if you had never seen an elephant? How would you know that it is only supposed to have 4 legs?

What do you see? What is the first thing you see? How does our experience influence our perception of this image? Duck and rabbit What would happen if you had never seen a rabbit before? What would you perceive then?

What do you see? What do you see first? How does our experience influence our perception of this image? Dalmatian, nose down sniffing the ground walking away from you. What if you weren't familiar with Dalmatians? Or dogs and their behaviour?

What do you see? What is the first thing you see? How does our experience influence our perception of this image? Face and the word LIAR You need to know cursive writing to perceive the word liar

Did you see the word ‘liar’?

What do you see? What is the first thing you see? How does our experience influence our perception of this image? Old woman and young woman

What do you see? What is the first thing you see? How does our experience influence our perception of this image? How many prongs are there?

What do you see? What is the first thing you see? How does our experience influence our perception of this image? sax player and lady’s face If you are a musician you might see the sax player first

What do you see? How many black circles can you count?

How do YOU see the world? Your preconceptions, assumptions, bias, perceptions, opinions, beliefs/values all shape how you see the world It’s important to examine and reflect on your way of knowing the world so you can be as aware as possible of your potential biases/viewpoint You can still have an opinion, of course, but it is important to know where your opinion is coming from

What does this all mean? And how does it have anything to do with psychology??? All branches of psychology are concerned with understanding human mental processes > the mind & how it works.

Your Turn! What do YOU see???
