Bellringer Turn in Parent Conference sign-ups at Mrs. Thomas’ desk. Get out your GIST statement worksheet that was assigned yesterday. Trade GIST statements with your partner and peer edit for the following: Grammar and Structure—Is the writing generally free from erros in capitalization? Did the writer use complete sentences? Content—Does the GIST statement effectively summarize the main idea of the text?

Claim, Cite, Clarify English II

Unit Objectives By the end of this unit, you will understand how authors use language to advance an argument and achieve purpose. You will also use language to advance your own claims and analysis.

Daily Objectives Advance claims using cited evidence from a text. Clarify the correlation between a claim and its textual evidence.

Guiding Question How do we use a text to support our claims?

What You Need Paper Writing Utensils Chapter 14 of The Jungle CCC Notes Outline Worksheet

Which Answer Sounds More Thought Out? Why is it important to recycle? Answer #1 Answer #2 I think that it’s important to recycle because it’s good for the environment. Recycling is important. According to research, recycling is good for the environment because it decreases pollution. Therefore, recycling is essential.

What Do The 3 Cs Mean to Me? Claim/Cite/Clarify is a way of answering questions or summarizing text. Claim it—claim the big ideas. Cite it—cite the information/support for those ideas. Clarify it—explain how it all works together to present a message.

When Do You Use CCC? Responding to short answer questions Writing research papers During persuasive speeches Summarizing paragraphs

Your Claim To answer any question or respond to any writing prompt, one must make a claim, or assertion, of some description.

Your Citation Whenever you make a claim, you MUST back it up with evidence. Ways to introduce your citation: “According to the text…” “The text states…” “The author describes…” “In the article…” What evidence from the text would you use to back up your claim?

Your Clarification Ways to introduce your clarification: Ties back to your claim. Explains how your citation supports your claim. Ways to introduce your clarification: “Knowing this…” “Therefore…” “As you can see…” “Because of this…” “Given the evidence…”

Let’s Try It Together Read the following passage on your own and answer the question: “Oatmeal has many health benefits. You may have heard the saying that a hearty bowl of oatmeal at breakfast “sticks to your ribs”. This is not too far off from the truth. Oatmeal contains fiber which stays in the stomach longer and helps you feel fuller for longer. This can prevent overeating later on in the day, which may help you maintain a healthy weight and avoid the health problems associated with being overweight.” Why is oatmeal healthy? Explain.

How’s This? It’s good for you because it keeps you from getting fat and stuff like that. Do you see claim, cite, and clarify? What other problems do you see?

How’s This? One characteristic of oatmeal that makes it a healthy meal choice is its fiber content. According to the text, these fibers make the stomach feel fuller for a longer period of time. As a result, oatmeal keeps individuals from overeating and can help avoid health problems associated with weight gain and overeating. Do you see claim, cite, and clarify?

Now It’s Your Turn Working with your partner, write a paragraph answering the HIGHLIGHTED question on your question slip. Make sure you use the CCC method! Don’t forget… We are ONLY talking to our partners OR our teacher! We are ONLY talking about the content of the lesson!

Let’s Compare Find the group that responded to your same question and work together to compare your responses. Make sure each group employed the CCC method as well as correct grammar and structure. Make sure no one started their response with a pronoun…because that’s pretty much the worst thing any human being could ever do! 

Back to the Beginning Get out your GIST statement from yesterday. Check to see if you followed the CCC method. If you did not, then edit your GIST statement to follow the CCC method. When you have finished, please turn these in to Mrs. Thomas. If you finish early, get out a clean piece of paper and respond to the following question: Would you rather lose all your money and valuables or all the pictures you have ever taken? Why? Use CCC!
