Ten minutes of book love

Direct Characterization an aspect of a character the author explains outright Example: “It was a much younger man, and not as tall as father either, but he wore the same type of uniform, only without as many decorations on it.” What do we know about this man, based on how he’s described here?

Indirect Characterization an aspect of a character the author does not say outright, but implies “He looked the boy up and down as if he had never seen a child before and wasn’t sure what he was supposed to do with one: eat it, ignore it, or kick it down the stairs” What do we know about this man, based on how he’s described here?

Find your 2 o’clock Partner Read through the different examples of indirect characterization and write down what you can infer about each character. 5 minutes

Turn and talk to someone at your table group: Why do you think John Boyne make the protagonist of his “fable” a 9-year-old boy? What about using a child as a main character makes this time period more approachable?

Writing exercise: write a short fiction story about one of the historical events below. Your protagonist should be a 9-year old child: American 1920’s American Great Depression WWI The atomic bomb

Chapters 1-4 Vocab

Homework: Chapters 4-6 and packet Due Tuesday
