Semantic layout in PowerPoint PowerPoint Lab Semantic layout in PowerPoint

Using Placeholders The empty box to the right is called a ‘placeholder’ If you do not move, or modify the placeholder, PowerPoint can help you format it.

Modified placeholders The placeholders on this slide have been modified (font, font size, position of textbox, color etc). Click the ‘reset’ button as shown in the screenshot to the right What happens? Why does it happen? If you need to see it again, click ‘undo’ and click ‘reset’ again to see the changes

Modified placeholders (cont…) This is another page which has modified placeholders. Try changing the design (refer to the screenshot). Does it look neat? Try hitting ‘reset’ (on the ‘Home’ ribbon) again. What happens?

Unmodified placeholders This slide uses the placeholders without moving, or modifying them. Try changing the design (refer to the screenshot). What can you conclude about how PowerPoint behaves when you leave placeholders alone?

Inserting Images Select the image at the bottom right. Press Ctrl-C. Click an empty area outside the slide (so that nothing is selected). Then press Ctrl-V. How was the image inserted? Click the ‘reset’ button. Did the image move? What appeared?

Inserting Images (cont…) Let’s try that again. Select the image at the bottom right. Press Ctrl-C. Click on the placeholder on the right (so that your cursor is blinking inside it) and press Ctrl-V How was the image inserted? Click the ‘reset’ button. Did the image move?

Try playing with the layouts Select the ‘Home’ ribbon, click ‘Layout’, and try the different layouts such as ‘Title Slide’, ‘Two Content’, etc.

Modified Slide? This slide looks like it’s modified. It doesn’t look like the rest of the presentation. Try hitting the ‘reset’ button to change it back. Did it work? What layout does this slide use?

Modifying Templates Modified placeholders: Unmodified placeholders: PowerPoint cannot help us format them in the future Unmodified placeholders: PowerPoint can help us automatically change them So how do we customize slides? We modify the whole design template, not the individual slides We use Slide Masters

Modifying Templates (cont…) Read all the instructions before continuing (you won’t be able to see this slide) Enter the slide master Select the first master (this one controls the general look of the whole presentation) Switch to the ‘Home’ ribbon and change the font and the color to red After you’re done, close the master view (‘Slide Master’ ribbon) What happened to your presentation? You may want to undo if ugly ;p

Modifying Templates (cont…) Each ‘slide’ in the ‘Slide Master’ view corresponds to one of the layouts you tried out earlier. Changing a layout in the ‘Slide Master’ will modify all your slides which uses that layout in your presentation. Try and experiment with different design templates, and modify them using the slide master.

When to Modify Templates Modify Just One Slide / Placeholder When a certain image/watermark has to appear on many different slides When you want to modify font / alignment / color across your whole presentation When you have only one page which have a specific look When you have a lot of drawing objects that needs to be arranged When you’re doing a design-heavy presentation (every slide looks different?)

Creating Hyperlinks Right click on the square on the bottom right Click ‘Hyperlink’ Select a location (refer screenshot) Run this presentation from this slide by pressing ‘Shift-F5’ Move your mouse until the pointer appears, click on the box What happens? Try hyperlinking the other shapes with other types of links.

Transitions vs Animations Is for the whole slide Go to the ‘Transitions’ ribbon and click on one of them to see the demo. Is for individual objects. Go to the ‘Animations’ ribbon. Select one of the text boxes on this page and try out an animation. Try and experiment with the Animation Pane

Transition Automatically change the slide based on time given

Audio Insert audio from file Modify the setting

Your task Create a slide PowerPoint presentation with: At least 1 title slide At least 5 images Apply animation and transition to make your animation more interesting Insert background music for your presentation Content: Introduction of yourself File name : powerpoint_yourName
