The ways of wikis 4/7/11

The 5 pillars of wikipedia It is an encyclopedia It has a neutral point of view It is free content which can be edited by anyone It has a code of conduct No other firm rules

1. Encyclopedias Written to teach others Accurate Does not report original research

2. Neutral point of view Balanced information No axes to grind or soap boxes Use of verifiable sources References Authors may have different opinions Evenly present all sides

3. Free content Must not use copyrighted material Pictures Papers Many writers / editors Anything you write can be changed by anyone else

4. Code of conduct Respect fellow authors Be civil Avoid conflicts of interest or personal attacks Find consensus Follow the three-revert rule - can’t make >3 reversions on one page in 24 hr period Act in good faith

5. There are no other rules Be bold in writing and editing Aim for perfection but it is not required Do not worry about messing up Someone else will improve on what you start Everything is backed up

Our class wiki Only we create it Content goal Can’t be edited by outside world Can be viewed by outside world if you give them the link Content goal To write a better description of the biology / chemistry / physics of animal communication To document interesting examples of how animal communication is shaped

Practicalities #0 - Getting to it Probably easiest to cut and paste this link into your browser so you don’t have to look at the blackboard wrap around

Practicalities - #1 Log in Can’t add material unless you log in

Now have more options on Main Page - let’s edit the page

Editing caveat There are two ways to edit Using the “Rich text editor” Using conventional wiki tools I’ll try to show both but I know conventional tools better

This view has the rich editor enabled I have turned Rich editor off here.

This view has the old fashioned wiki editing I have turned Rich editor off here.

Wikipedia - editing http://en. wikipedia

Editing cheatsheet: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Cheatsheet

To add a page Create a link to the new page [[Name of new page | displayed text for link]] For example I could make a page to discuss cichlid fish vision by adding: [[Cichlid | Cichlid fish visual communication]]

Added topics - Don’t forget to SAVE Can also preview first The link that shows on wiki Name of page

Show preview - Don’t forget to SAVE See the preview above See edited text below

Saved page See changes First time you create a link it will be red. To work on that page, click the link and it will open in edit more.

Editing hints ==heading== Text External link with text description ‘’italic’’ ‘’’bold’’’ ‘’’’’bold and italic’’’’’ External link with text description [http://www.test.org Text] Link to a page on our wiki [[Page name | Displayed text]]

More editing hints Bulleted or numbered text Insert image * Bullets # Numbered * # Insert image [[Image:Name_of_file.jpg]] Then need to upload file

I put a heading, some bullets and a figure

I put a heading, some bullets and a figure Filename|location|size|Caption

Need to upload figure Click here to upload figure

Upload page for adding images Choose file - find it on your computer and select it Fill in a destination filename that matches your [Image:filename] statement Upload

File history page

Final page Name of page Added text Added figure with caption

Figure formatting [[Image:FileName|{type{|{location}|{size}|{caption}]] {type} can be thumb or frame {location} can be right, left, center Text wraps around right or left, but not around center Size can be {width}px which is width in pixels {Caption} - any text which doesn’t fit type, location or size is assumed to be caption Note: I can not get size to work. I have tried 400x300px or 200x or 200 but none of these changes the size.

For next Tuesday Make a page for your final project on the “Animal Communication” page Add some of your references to that page Add a picture How should we organize page?
