Types of POV

First Person Narrator Narrator PARTICIPATES in the story’s action See things from this narrator’s POV, so we know his/her thoughts and feelings Issues of trustworthiness (reader decides based on EVIDENCE)

Objective Narrator is just a spectator in the story Tells the story’s actions and dialogue NEVER reveals any character’s thoughts or feelings Used for mysterious effect

Third Person Narrator Narrator does NOT participate in the action of the story Narrator does reveal thoughts and/or feelings of character Two types of third person narrator

Third Person Omniscient POV Narrator knows EVERYTHING (thoughts and/or feelings) about everyone Narrator gets inside the head of his/her characters

Third Person Limited Omniscient Narrator knows what’s happening inside the HEAD of one character Creates mystery because the reader only understands something from one character’s POV
