Presentation transcript:

Activity Type: Discussion Use PPt 2 activities to support whole class discussion on the factors that influence plant growth.

Activity Type: Discussion Re-capping on these images from PPt1 sequencing the most suitable to least suitable environments for plant growth (A to D), conduct a whole class discussion on the factors that influence plant growth. After the whole class discussion divide the class into four groups. Ask each group to select four factors that they perceive to be the most important for the growth of plants. Next pages: Each group will report back to the whole class by selecting and recording their 4 items, giving reasons for their choices.

Teacher Note: This page has been copied 4 times to allow for each group to record their choices. The pages can then be returned to at the end of the lesson for comparison and discussion. Group 1 records its selection

Teacher Note: This page has been copied 4 times to allow for each group to record their choices. The pages can then be returned to at the end of the lesson for comparison and discussion. Group 4 records its selection

Aoife's selection Whole class discussion on the 4 items Guzzler's friend Aoife selected. (Temperature selected is too high)

Rohan's selection Whole class discussion on the 4 items Guzzler's friend Rohan selected. (Water has not been selected) Discussion on Aoife's and Rohan's selections will have allowed the class to identify that the 4 factors most important for plant growth are sun soil water suitable temperature Class then return to each group's recorded selection for comparison and discussion.

Children then revert to the four environmental images and identify the factors that are present to support plant growth. Image 1 Sun(hidden but growth demonstrates its presence) Soil Water Suitable temperature Excellent growth

Image 2 - Arctic Identify the factors that are present to support plant growth. Sun (no daylight for half the year) Water No soil Temperature too cold No plant growth

Image 3 - Harvest Identify the factors that are present to support plant growth. Sun Soil Water Suitable temperature Excellent growth

Image 4 - Desert Identify the factors that are present to support plant growth. Sun Some water stored in plants - little or no rainfall Sand - no soil Temperature too high Minimal growth

Comparison Chart Children decide which factors belong with each environment. Discuss and compare the environments.
