Foreshadowing and Flashback The Landlady

Foreshadowing When an author hints at events before they occur in a literary work. Foreshadowing lets readers know beforehand something about what is going to happen later.

Foreshadowing Foreshadowing helps to create suspense and irony, and also keeps the reader involved in the unfolding plot. Foreshadowing may come from a character, from the setting, or from the narrator.

For example, in The Giver, Jonas’s experience of the change in the apple, which is contrasted with Asher’s inability to perceive the change, is a foreshadowing that Jonas, despite all the emphasis on Sameness, is different. Foreshadowing

An author may also go back to material that happened prior to the beginning of the story, or earlier in the plot sequence. This is called flashback. Flashbacks give the reader background material that is necessary for the understanding of the story. Flashback

Flashbacks may come from the characters or the narrator.

Partner work: Are there any other examples of foreshadowing in The Landlady? What information might these examples contain? Land Lady film
