Today’s Schedule Unit 3: Refugee - Vocabulary - Idiom Practice - Review of Reading Skill: Skimming - Analogy Practice Video Article Discussion Homework

Next week… Unit 5: Globalization

Unit 3: Refugee

Vocabulary (p. 35) Write down these definitions refugee: a person forced to flee for refuge or safety to a foreign country (for example, during a war) IDP: Internally Displaced Persons (people forced to flee their homes but who, unlike refugees, remain within their country's borders)

Idiom A form of expression natural to a language or group of people. “You’re in over your head.” Meaning: You’re in a difficult situation.

Let’s hear your sentences with the idioms from last week… “be a breeze” “be easy as pie” “have two left feet” “have a green thumb” “have a golden touch” “have a nose for something”

Idioms: Humility – p. 36 down to earth putting on airs is showing off thinks he is God’s gift to mankind put all the boys in their place blowing his own horn

Lesson for Life: “Humility” and “Humiliate” humility: a modest or low view of one’s own importance humiliate: to make someone feel ashamed by injuring their dignity, usually publicly To have humility is one of the greatest qualities a person can show, while humiliating others is one of the lowest behaviors. “In humility consider others better than yourselves. Look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.”

Analogies Definition: A comparison between two things to establish their relationship and further explain them. Simpler definition: word relationship Step 1: What is the relationship in the first set of words? Step 2: Find the same relationship in another set of words. Relationship: Covering paint wall glove hand

Analogy Practice When we do an analogy exercise, we can say, “____ is to ____ as ____ is to _____.” For example, “Up is to down as left is to right.” What is the relationship between up and down and between left and right? (they are opposites, also called antonyms)

Analogy Practice Blue: Sky, Green: ______ Grass Relationship: Color Teeth: Mouth, Room: ______ House Relationship: Inside of, or part to whole Waitress: Restaurant, ______: School Teacher Relationship: Person who works in

Analogies in the book… Most of the analogies in our textbook are very difficult! They are similar to the ones that native English students have to know for our major examinations, and most of these students probably would get less than half of them right! But do not fear, my friends… in class, we are only going to do a few of the easier ones as a sample, so that you are familiar with the process.

Let’s look at just one example… (p.21) 4. Soldier: Army: A. element: compound B. music: harmony C. ruler: height D. negative: exposure Step 1: What is the relationship between soldier and army? (part to whole... a soldier is part of the army) Step 2: Which set of words has the same relationship? (A. element: compound) In science, an element (like oxygen) is part of a compound (like water).

Reading Skill: Skimming Skimming is reading for the general idea or the big picture. 6 practical steps for skimming: 1) Read the title. 2) Note the author’s name and the source. 3) Read the first paragraph completely. 4) Read subheadings and first sentences of remaining paragraphs. 5) Look for main ideas, clue words, direction words, and numbers. 6) Read the final paragraph completely. 7 min.

Skimming Practice Skim the text at the top of page 41. You have 30 seconds. 11. B 12. B

Earthquake in Haiti - January 2010

“We Are the World” by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie We are the world We are the children We are the ones who make a brighter day So let’s start giving There’s a choice we’re making We’re saving our own lives It’s true we’ll make a better day Just you and me

Video: “We Are The World” What do you think is the purpose of this video / song? What is the meaning of the title?

Refugee camps on the border of Myanmar and Thailand

Article Discussion Read the article: “Ultimate Frisbee in Burmese Refugee Camps” PLEASE DO NOT WRITE ON THE PAPER Article summary: - Who: Refugees from Myanmar (Burma) - Where: Thailand - What: The refugees are facing bad conditions, but this story highlights a good experience for the children.

“Sharing the sport of Ultimate with teen refugees has been an incredible, eye-opening experience. Ultimate is the ultimate ice breaker, transcending language barriers.” – Liz Lu, volunteer

Comprehension Questions What are “communities of displaced ethnic people”? (line 21) Explain what the DARE organization does. What does “a government that turns its head to…” mean? (line 16) How does Ultimate Frisbee help the refugees?

For Further Study (not required homework) Read the extra article on the class website, “Burmese Refugees Persecuted in Bangladesh”. Finish Unit 3 exercises and reading.

Closing Thoughts: “Count your blessings.” Don’t all people deserve to have the same rights? Why do we get to live in a comfortable situation while so many people suffer everyday without their basic needs met? We cannot solve all the world’s problems, but we can do our best to care for those around us. “In humility consider others better than yourselves. Look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.”

Homework Short written assignment: Please write a paragraph (5-7 sentences) giving your general opinion of American culture. You will turn in your paragraph next week. Use the question on p. 78: “What do you think of the American culture?” Use this outline: A) Two things you like about American culture. B) Two things you dislike about American culture.
