Problem Solving Subject: Applied Math Date: 9/12/14

The 3 main skills we will use to Problem Solve are: 1. Solve by drawing a picture/diagram 2. Solve by using calculation 3. Solve by trial and error

Example 1: A gardener is asked to plant either tomato that are 18 inches tall in a straight line with 2 feet between each plant. How much space is needed between the first plant and the last one? hint: draw a diagram!

Example 2: Suppose that you have 10 coins consisting of quarters and dimes. If you have a total of $1.90, find the number of each type of coin. hint: use trial and error! Quarters Dimes Amount

Example 3: Megan's car gets 28 miles per gallon on long trips. She leaves home, bound for a friend's house 370 miles away. If she makes the drive in 6 hours, how many gallons of gas per hour is the car using? hint: use calculation!
