History Through Literature Chapter 19: Nothing Like it in the World

Saint-Just and Robespierre Robespierre was a leader of the Jacobins during the French Revolution. (1790s) Saint-Just was his right hand man Robespierre led the Revolution at its height of the Reign of Terror. (10,000) Conservatives took power from Robespierre (before he would kill them also) and executed both of them and 20 followers

Dark Ages – 1914-1945 WWI Depression Fascist Germany and Hitler Spain – Fascism Humiliation of Italy French Decay, British decline WWII

The American Century Never had the weight of a changeless history Won WWII, won the Cold War Richest freest country ever

US Constitution Our guide post - not perfect though until 13th, 14th, 15th, 19th We rejected despotism, noble class, and state religion

Alexander von Humboldt German – 1850s Biogeography - ?? First proposed that the continents were connected at one time

America verses Islamic Fundamentalism US blamed for women without veils Women watching TV Driving a car They are fanatics that want to be in absolute control of their women, their children, their economy, their religion, their society, and their politics We can end the Terrorist War by encouraging Islam to educate their women, allow everyone to vote, encouraging freedom of religion

America then and Now Old Problems – slavery, women in politics, Native Americans, using up national resources, colonialism in Panama and Philippines, stopped immigration. We have solved most. Still need to work on racism, sexism and now terrorism and WMDs We can do it!
