Request for Flexibility Interest Form School: Woodland ES Learning Community: Central Concept Name Class Size Waiver Brief Description of the Need/Challenge Our Strategic plan focuses on increasing parental involvement at Woodland to positively impact student achievement. When Woodland was a conversion charter, (2000-2010) approximately 50 families were enrolled at Woodland as part of the charter through a lottery process. Since 2010, when the charter was not renewed, the current students impacted were grandfathered in at Woodland, however, provisions for younger siblings were not made. Each year since that time, some of our most involved, committed families have had to “wait and see” if their Kindergarten children would be allowed to attend WES due to increased enrollment and this has caused a great deal of hardship on these families and the school. Although it has worked out each year and the children have been accepted, it has often been very late in the summer, and many families have left WES as a result of our inability to make provisions based on enrollment trends. Brief Description of the Concept and How It Addresses the Need/Challenge Currently we are only aware of 2-3 siblings that will be impacted by this process, as most of the original charter students have moved on to middle school. Woodland’s SGC is requesting a waiver from kindergarten maximum class size of 22 to allow us to increase these classes by 1 student, if necessary, to accommodate these students and allow for timely acceptance in the hardship process. The Woodland SGC understands that an additional teacher will not be granted at 10-day count unless the overage exceeds the number of slots that are granted to these 2-3 students. Expected Results Continued engagement by these families while allowing them to maintain their family at a single elem. school. Anticipated Cost None Known Implications While we understand that the hardship process is not considered an area that schools are able to request flexibility, we are requesting the waiver specifically around class size, so that enrollment will not be negatively impacted by these 2-3 students. We are willing to account for these students even if it requires having an extra student in 2-3 K classes. 8/11/2014
