JEOPARDY GAME BY NUR KOSE INFORMATION FROM NOUMAN ALI KHAN, BAYYINAH TV JANUARY 2013/SAFAR 1434 Quran Cover to Cover: Surah Baqarah 1.1 – Ayahs 1-4

Welcome to the Jeopardy Game! Get ready for loads of fun while we test you on the information you learned in the first 25 minutes of the lecture Surah Baqarah 1 by Nouman Ali Khan. You will be divided up into 2, 4, or 5 teams. Each team will have the chance to answer the same number of questions. On your teams turn, you will get to decide which category you would like to choose a question from. If you answer the question correctly, you get the amount of points displayed. If you answer it incorrectly, however, you lose that many points. When all the questions have been asked, the person in charge of keeping score will count all the points together and declare who the winning team is!

Surah Baqarah 1.1 – Ayahs 1-4 Vocabulary and Definitions BenefitsIman (Belief, Faith) Other

What are the huroof muqattaaat?

They are the broken/separated letters.

What does dhalika mean? How is it different from hadha?

dhalika means that It is used to refer to something far away. hadha means this It is used to refer to something close by.

What does Salah literally mean? Fill in the blanks: It ____ us to Allah by ____ us to the Quran.

Salah literally means connection It connects us to Allah by connecting us to the Quran.

What is important to note about Allah using the word ila in the ayah below instead of the word ala?

By using ila Allah made it seem as a privilege and gift for us. If he had used ala it would seem as a responsibility for us.

Explain what yaqeen is.

Conviction as if you can see something and have experienced it. No matter what others say, you are strongly convinced of it.

What did the Jews in Medina pride themselves in? How did they use this to mock Rasulullah (S)?

They prided in their knowledge and ability to read and write. They mocked Rasulullah (S) because he couldnt read or write and they couldnt imagine him being a prophet.

Why does Allah use that to describe the Quran when it is right with us?

Allah is using that because He is referring to the actual book in the seventh heaven which is very far away. (lawhul mahfoodh)

What is something important to note about Allah using alif laam meem? Hint: It has to do with Rasulullah (S).

The Prophet (S) didnt know how to read or write so he didnt know the letters of the Arabic alphabet. By putting those letters there, Allah shows that the Quran is not written by the prophet but by a divine source; someone else is teaching the prophet. The Quran is from a greater source.

What in the ayah shows that you cannot believe in Messengers after Rasulullah (S)? Explain. And who believe in which has been sent down to you (Muhammad Peace be upon him) and in that which we sent down before and they believe with certainty in the Hereafter.

Allah mentions that it is required to believe in Muhammad (S) and the message of those before to have iman. He doesnt mention anything about messages of the future.

Name a benefit of Allah using huroof muqattaaat in the beginning of Surah Baqarah. Hint: It is related to Surah Fatiha.

In Fatiha we asked Allah for guidance and it is as if this surah is the response to that call. By starting off with three letters that we dont understand, Allah is putting us in our place. He is reminding us that we cant come to this book thinking that we know everything. We need to humble ourselves and remember that this book is divine.

Which part of iman is constantly highlighted in Surah Baqarah?

Belief in the message

Who are the genuinely concerned? Who are the people who really want to protect themselves? What are they called in Arabic in the beginning of Surah Baqarah?

Muttaqoon/muttaqeen

What are the three main areas of iman?

Belief in Allah Belief in the message Belief in the afterlife

What are the parts of belief in the message?

Belief in the angels who bring down the revelation Belief in the book, the actual message Belief in the messenger who receives the message

What is the starting point of taqwa with Allah? What does this relationship with Allah grow into? (Hint: Fear of what to fear of what?)

Starts with fear of Allahs punishment and turns into fear of disappointing Allah.

What are some examples of huroof muqattaaat in Surah Baqarah?

Alif laam meem الٓمٓ

What is something Allah put in our lives to keep us constantly in guard and in check of ourselves?

Salah – prayer وَيُقِيمُونَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ

What is the positive reinforcement in this ayah?

Rizq – from what Allah has provided us with: food, clothes, money, etc. مِمَّا رَزَقۡنَـٰهُمۡ

Why do people read the Quran and fall into doubt afterwards?

Allah explains that there is no doubt in this book for those who are truly concerned for themselves and who actually want to protect themselves.

How did Allah make rizq seem as something unseen?

We can see the food that Allah has given us but we cant actually see that it is Allah who has given it to us. The muttaqeen understand that rizq is from what Allah has provided them with.
