Assessments and Workbooks Each Unit has a summative Assessment and a BePro workbook which you will work through in advance of each assessment task – the workbook provides you with formative assessment tasks to help you learn. Assessments Unit – Developing Professional Practice Learning Outcome: 1 Understand what is required to be an effective and efficient HR professional. Assessment Criteria 1.1 Evaluate what it means to be an HR professional with reference to the CIPD’s most current Profession Map. 1.2 Describe the elements of group dynamics and conflict resolution methods. For each Unit you will receive an assessment brief (all the assessments are taken from the CIPD assessment bank) and a Workbook. You will be able to see what the assessment task is in advance of the learning you go through within the workbook. Each Assessment covers all the Learning Outcomes for the Unit for instance Unit 1 5DVP has 3 learning outcomes: 1 Understand what is required to be an effective and efficient HR professional. 2 Be able to perform efficiently and effectively as an HR professional. 3 Be able to apply CPD techniques to construct, implement and review a personal development plan – the learning outcomes are then broken down into Assessment Criteria on the right hand side to show you what you are expected to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of – for Learning Outcome 1 in 5DVP the Assessment Criteria are: 1.1 Evaluate what it means to be an HR professional with reference to the CIPD’s most current Profession Map. 1.2 Describe the elements of group dynamics and conflict resolution methods. The Learning Outcomes and Assessment Criteria are clearly stated within each workbook and there the learning material/activities are designed to facilitate your knowledge and understanding, you will be able to see clearly where the learning fits into the assessment brief.
Open the assessment brief Open the assignment document and see how the Learning Outcomes and Assessment Criteria are set out.
Active reading Knowing why you are reading Focusing on different aspects when you are reading – overall impression, key themes, purpose Re-reading as necessary Summarising key points in a format that works for you - referencing your reading
Assignment writing (Assessment) Source material The purpose of the assessments are to demonstrate your knowledge and your understanding of the topic Make sure you follow the assignment brief and answer all the questions, following the format asked for You are working at level 5 and it is expected that you will be doing a lot of extra reading around the topics covered. You must give credit to those authors whose work you read and who help you to understand the subjects. When you read something and then use the idea in your work even if you have used your own words to explain it you must still give credit to the original author. This is called REFERENCING To demonstrate your knowledge and your understanding of the topics we cover in the modules you will be expected to produce a summative piece of work which will be assessed and internally verifyed, this will also be internally verified to ensure we have common standards, it will finally be passed off by a CIPD external verifier. What you need to remember for each piece of work is to follow the instructions, is it a report? Is it a group presentation or an essay? If it is a report, you need to present it as a report. You will need to demonstrate what you have learned in the class and also provide evidence of your wider reading around the topic. To ensure you demonstrate your understanding you will have to add context, this means using your own experiences, or your own workplace to demonstrate the practical application of the theory. Beyond a mere description of the theories, models and practices Analyse opposite/conflicting views and different perspectives Compare and contrast the ideas, theories and perspectives Discuss and analyse in the context of your issue/organisation Critically evaluate the literature Analyse relevance to organisation Evaluate theories/models/frameworks most appropriate for the context Use ‘short’ quotations to add interest and meaning for the reader Structure in themes - link back to research objectives/questions Acknowledge all references - Harvard protocol
Researching and referencing Referencing – you must remember to always cite the sources you use and to include a bibliography (a list of all the work that has helped you to write your assignment) This might be in the form of a direct quote or where you change the words but it still means the same thing. Take the following quote – “the state has stepped in by requiring employers to take reasonable steps to protect the health and safety of employees” (Torrington, Hall & Taylor 2012:78) This was taken from Torrington, Hall & Taylor (2012) “Human Resource Management” seventh edition. Prentice Hall The above needs to be appropriately referenced if you are using it in a sentence and don’t forget page number for direct quotes When you are reading about your topic you will be gathering information which you can use in your assignment, sometimes you will read something and put your own understanding to it, you will change the words the authors use but will still be taking their ideas on board, you must give them credit for this, so you will include their names and the year the book was published after that section in your work. You will also put a full reference at the end of the work so whoever is reading your work can follow up if they want to and read more from the author you have cited. Citing all your sources, when you are writing your assignments you need to ensure you demonstrate you knowledge and understanding of the topics, to do this you can show that you have read around the topic by referencing what you have read. Referencing hand outs, go through the Harvard one, explain about it being a Teesside one. www.darlington.ac.uk
How to reference – Harvard referencing see additional documents on referencing For a Direct quote “ “ quotation marks, author, date and page no. (Armstrong 2012: p 23) this is what you must include IN your actual work You must include a bibliography page at the back of your assignment showing all the books, websites and publications you have used in your work this should be in alphabetical order and should be in the Harvard style of referencing Armstrong, P authors name (2012) date the book was published –normally found on the second page Human Resource Management title of the book Prentice Hall publisher normally found on the back page Indirect quote – use your own words but still give credit to the - author and date (Armstrong 2012) this is what you must include IN your actual work Armstrong, P (2012) Human Resource Management Prentice Hall this is what you must include IN your bibliography
