How can communities of believers be strengthened?? Religion Term 1 How can communities of believers be strengthened??

What is a Community of Believers? In this unit you will be able to identify some of the ways in which faith is shared and strengthened in communities of believers, past and present. You will describe the significance of personal and communal prayer and worship for communities of believers including the importance of the Sabbath for members of Jewish communities and of prayer for Catholic communities

Learning Intention I can identify groups to which I belong.

Activity In your Religion book, brainstorm all the groups to which you belong. Groups I belong to...

Learning Intention I can identify the characteristics of different types of communities.

Consider the following communities we belong to: Australian Community Gold Coast Community St Kevin’s Community 5E Community Online Community Sports Clubs

Activity: For each of these communities consider the following questions: What are the shared beliefs and values of this community? How does this community welcome newcomers? How are new comers initiated into this community? How is this community nourished and/or sustained? How does this community nourish and sustain others? How does this community make me feel? In groups of 5, work together to brainstorm answers for each of the questions for each community. Click on the links on the previous page to take you to the Google Doc for each community.

Exploring the characteristics of communities of believers Who makes up our school community? What makes our community different to other school communities eg state schools? What special characteristics identify our school as a community of believers?

Learning Intention I can identify the key beliefs of the Catholic Church.

The Ten Commandments The ten commandments, or decalogue, are the rules we live by as catholics. Complete the sheet, ordering the ten commandments.

The Apostles Creed Listen to John Burland’s - Yes Lord I believe

The Apostle’s Creed Use the words in the box to complete the Apostle’s Creed.

Learning Intention I can identify the symbols and practices which indicate our school belongs to the wider catholic community.

Activity: Symbol walk In pairs, you will walk around the school and identify and photograph at least 5 symbols which identify our school as being catholic. Upload your photos to the shared Google Folder.

Assessment 1 Using the photos you collected, use photopeach to explain how these symbols connect our school to the catholic community. Reflect on the meaning of these symbols to you, our school and the wider catholic community.

Assessment 2 - Webquest Use the Brisbane Catholic Archdiocese website to complete the webquest.

Learning Intention I can identify ways in which followers of Judaism live their relationship with God as a community of believers.

Jesus was Jewish Jesus grew up in a Jewish community of believers. Many stories in the bible show how Jesus lived out his Jewish beliefs such as visiting the synagogue. Watch the clip on synagogues.

The Importance of the Sabbath Listen to this clip on the importance of the The Sabbath.

Shabbat Create a Padlet to share your information and resources. In groups of 3, conduct an inquiry into the practices of Shabbat including food, work, family time, candles, blessings, prayers, songs. Create a Padlet to share your information and resources. You may find the following websites useful: Teaching Judaism All about Shabbat The Sabbath - BBC

Reflection on Learning In regards to Judaism: What do we know? • What have we learned? • What have we achieved? • What helped us to be successful? • What made us less successful? • What will we do better next time?

What strengthens a community of believers? We will explore the significance of personal and communal prayer and worship including the Eucharist for nourishing and strengthening Christian communities of believers.

Learning Intention I can recall ways I have experienced Eucharist.

Eucharist What do we mean by eucharist? How have we experienced Eucharist? When was the first Eucharist? Why do Catholics celebrate Eucharist? Have you heard the words ‘ Do this in memory of me’? What does this refer to? In your Religion Book, using words or pictures share your experiences of Eucharist.

The Last Supper Watch the clip on the Last Supper.

The Last Supper Jesus celebrated the passover meal in Jerusalem with his disciples the night before he died. This meal, celebrated by Jesus, is now known as the last supper. We remember the Last Supper in Holy Week on Holy Thursday.

Role Play Using props act out the Last Supper.

Passover The Festival of Passover was important to the Jewish people. Read about it here.

The Seder Plate Search the internet to find a depiction of a Seder plate. Draw and label the foods traditionally included in the Jewish Passover meal.

Passover vs Eucharist Compare, draw and label the common elements of the Passover meal and the Eucharistic meal.

Learning Intention I can recall the origin of the Eucharist.

Origins of the Eucharist Examine the three Gospel accounts of the Last Supper here or by looking up: Luke 22:8-13,17-20; Matthew 26:17-19,26-30 and Mark 14:13-16,22-26 Cut and paste the three versions into tagxedo. Which words were most prevalent?

Learning Intention I can analyse ways in which the Eucharist strengthens communities of believers.

The Nine Purposes of the Mass Visit the Together at One Altar website and read the nine purposes of the mass. Record these in your Religion book.

Dismissal What does it means when the Priest says "Go forth and announce the Gospel of the Lord in the way you speak and act " during the dismissal part of the Mass? What does it looks like to live according to Jesus’ new commandment of charity (love) and caring for the wellbeing of others?

Assessment 3 Examine and reflect on the photographs taken during special events at our school which show the school community participating in different parts of the Mass as well as some images of living the Eucharist (Caritas, love) outside of the Mass. Work in teams of two or three to develop text to go with each picture to demonstrate your understanding of how the community is being nourished and sustained by the Eucharist. For example next to an image of students offering each other the sign of peace, you might write that shaking hands at the sign of peace makes us feel that we belong and that others wish us well and to find peace on the journey of life. Images and text can be presented using Photopeach or Moviemaker.

Success Criteria I can identify key beliefs of the Catholic community I can explain the significance of the Eucharist in strengthening communities of believers. I can identify ways our faith is shared within the Brisbane Catholic Church Community. I can reflect on how I participate in the Eucharist and what the parts of the mass mean to me
