I watched a film He plays tennis I have eaten a sandwich We have talked to our friend They played football I watch TV She liked the meal I eat sweets You talk in lessons PAST PRESENT

1. One of these texts is talking about the past and one about the present. Which is which? 2. What is it about the verb phrases that show if they are in the past or the present? Hier, j’ai nagé à la piscine et j’ai mangé un sandwich. Ma soeur a joué au tennis et mes parents ont écouté la musique. J’ai passé le soir avec mes amis, nous avons regardé un film. Le weekend je nage à la piscine et je mange un sandwich. Ma soeur joue au tennis et mes parents écoutent la musique. Je passe le soir avec mes amis, nous regardons un film.

vendredi,le vingt-trois juin WALT – ON VA PARLER DU PASSÉ. I have You have He/she has We have They have (m/f)

To make the past tense, you need 3 things: Subject pronoun (the word that tells us who did the action) Have/has (from the verb avoir) 2. 1. 3.. ai as a avons avez ont J’ Tu Il/Elle Nous Vous Ils/Elles past participle, Eg joué

The Perfect Tense We have won two matches this year. j’ tu il/elle You use this to describe a completed action in the past. e.g. I played football last week. We have won two matches this year. SUBJECT j’ tu il/elle nous vous ils/elles AVOIR ai as a avons avez ont PAST PARTICIPLE regardé joué mangé voyagé payé visité I have You have He/she has We have They have (m/f)

3. Then you add a verb to say what the person did When you look up a verb in the dictionary, it will show you the INFINITIVE. Infinitives mean ‘to _______’, e.g. ‘to play’. In French, infinitives always end in either ER, IR or RE. To talk about the past, you have to change the ending on the infinitive, e.g. to play  played. This is called the PAST PARTICIPLE. Look at the verbs below – can you work out how they change? Regarder (to watch) Finir (to finish) Répondre (to answer) Regardé (watched) Fini (finished) Répondu (answered) The rule for ER verbs is: The rule for IR verbs is: The rule for RE verbs is: So what would be the PAST PARTICIPLE of these verbs? Manger  M_ _ _ _ Dormir  D_ _ _ _ Perdre  P_ _ _ _

The Perfect Tense (le passé composé) This is used to describe a completed action in the past, e.g: I played football last week. SUBJECT j’ tu il/elle nous vous ils/elles AVOIR ai as a avons avez ont PAST PARTICIPLE ‘-er’ verbs - Remove r Add an accent on the last e  é I have You have He/she has We have They have ‘-ir’ verbs - Remove r ‘-re’ verbs - Remove re - Add u Not all verbs follow these rules for past participles. A list of irregular verbs can be found here.

For a yellow slip, write down what each one means in English. Talking about the past Fill in the gaps with the correct word for ‘have’ and the past participle (the word that in English ends in ‘-ed’) of the verb in brackets. Look at your book for help!
