Eastshore’s APAAS Program Shelley Naramore 4th, Steve Tobenkin 5th, Patricia Goheen 6th Welcome Parents!

Growth Mindset Confidence does not come from praise; it comes from having struggled and succeeded. Intelligence is not necessarily innate and can be maximized through effort.

What is a scholar? One who… take risks and is an active learner. supports peers who take risks. is intrigued by mistakes. enjoys effort.

Dweck, Carol: Mindset: the new psychology of success, p. 17. “I think intelligence is something you have to work for…it isn’t just given to you…Most kids, if they’re not sure of an answer, will not raise their hand to answer the question. But what I usually do is raise my hand because if I’m wrong, then my mistake will be corrected. Or I will raise my hand and say, ‘How would this be solved?’ or ‘I don’t get this. Can you help me?’ Just by doing that I’m increasing my intelligence.” - 7th grade student

In a Child’s Mind 4th Grade: “ If a child makes a mistake their parents might get angry. But, the child can tell them, ‘Mom, Dad, I am learning. My mistakes are helping me become a better student and child.’ “ 5th Grade: “I lack confidence in myself, and that holds me back from always asking for help. I hope that in the future my lack of self confidence won’t hold me back from my goals.” 6th Grade: “ I wish I could, but I don’t have enough heart to be brave. I wish I could raise my hand and say, ‘Help me!’ ”

What do scholars’ parents do? They have a “healthy hands off” policy regarding homework. They emphasize the importance of perseverance over grades and perfect scores. They allow for mistakes realizing that resilience is built when we experience disappointment.

Mathematics program Focus is on the problem solving process and the ability to communicate mathematical reasoning. Instruction is not driven by a textbook, but rather by standards and readiness. Every child will be given the opportunity to master four years of standards in three years.

Common Core Mathematical Practices 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. 4. Model with mathematics. 5. Use appropriate tools strategically. 6. Attend to precision. 7. Look for and make use of structure. 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

These two courses are considered similar in rigor. All universities look for students to take 4 years of Math in high school.

Thank You. We are looking forward to a wonderful school year!
