Grammar & Mechanics Who/Which Clauses They’re not a complete sentence on your own. They dress up your writing and add important information. The dog chased after the man who was eating beef jerky. Emily didn’t want the red t-shirt, she wanted the green one which she had seen on TV.

Grammar & Mechanics Correct or improve the sentences below, with correct use of pronouns, quotation marks, who/which clauses, or www.asia.b clauses. Duane didn’t like Duane’s schedule at school he had one boring class after another. Duane’s least favorite was math Duane wasn’t very good at addition and subtraction. Duane’s tutor helped Duane get improve his skills Duane’s tutor was good at helping kids understand hard topics. I love working with kids Duane’s tutor said.

Reading & writing Read the passage below and write down the three or four key facts from the story. Underline the key words of your summary. Daedalus and Icarus Escape again Peter Strelzyk and Gunter Wetzel’s escape from Communist East Germany in a hot air balloon sounds like the myth of Daedalus and Icarus. In 1979 they and their families, who were desperate for freedom, flew over the Berlin Wall. For two years, Strelzyk and Wetzel had secretly put everything together. Then they lifted off and sailed 8,200 feet above the cruel barbed wire and concrete wall. When they landed on the other side, they were in free West Germany. They were like Daedalus and Icarus in the sky again, but this time the dangerous escape was a success for all.

Reading & writing Read the passage below and write down the three or four key facts from the story. Underline the key words of your summary. Night Crossing A great escape happened the night Peter Strelzyk and Gunter Wetzel crossed from East to West Germany in a hot air balloon. They flew it over the twelve- foot high barrier known as the “Iron Curtain.” It was dangerous. They feared that neighbors would turn them in to the police, and there was the danger of fire. Secretly, their wives sewed sheets and curtains together for the balloon, while Strelzyk and Wetzel built the basket, a flame thrower, and a gas burner. These eight Germans, who risked their lives to flee from Communism, crossed into freedom one great night.

Reading & writing Try combining your summaries of each reading into one summary of three or four points to capture the most important parts of the two.

Extra practice Write down any new words you encounter this week, write down their definitions, and practice using them. Write your own fairy tale or story. Be sure to use: quotations marks when characters speak personal pronouns who-which clauses REMINDER: Next week’s class we’ll be back to Tuesday. Thank you again for your flexibility!
