Parts of the map 1. Title- Tell you what the map is about and what information the map is showing

Parts of the map 2. Legend/Key – Explains what the colors , symbols and lines mean. 3. Symbols- Pictures that mean something. Explained in the Legend/Key

Parts of the map 4. Scale- shows real life distance compared to the map’s scale and size. Usually use a ruler to help find the distance based on the scale Example: 1:100 (1 inch = 100 miles)

Parts of the map 5. Compass Rose- shows north, south, east, and west

Hemisphere- one of the halves that earth is divided into Hemisphere- one of the halves that earth is divided into. Either north and south or east and west. North/South is divided by the Equator East/West is divided by the Prime Meridian

Parts of the map Longitude- lines on the map that SHOW east and west.

Parts of the map Latitude- Lines on a map that SHOW north and south.

Absolute Location- the exact placement on a map based on the latitude and longitude. (Ex. 30°N, 45° W) Relative Location- the location of one place in relation to another place. (Ex. The mall is 5 miles south of the school)

3 types of maps 1. Physical Map- Shows the location and shape of the Earths Physical features (mountains, rivers, oceans etc.)Basically shows landforms with ELEVATION and WATER DEPTH.

3 types of maps 2. Political Map- Show states, cities, and countries. Shows man made boundaries.

3 types of maps 3. Thematic Map- A map that focuses on ideas or a themes. (examples: Population, Resources, Weather, Plants)
