THE FIVE THEMES OF GEOGRAPHY: Location Place Human-Environment Interaction Movement Regions Do you remember learning about these last year?

LOCATION Where are we? Absolute Location Relative Location A latitude and longitude (global location) or a street address (local location). Paris France is 48o North Latitude and 2o East Longitude. The White House is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Relative Location Described by landmarks, time, direction or distance. From one place to another. Go 1 mile west on main street and turn left for 1 block. You are Here

PLACE Human Characteristics Physical Characteristics What is it like there? What kind of place is it? Human Characteristics What are the main languages, customs, and beliefs. How many people live, work, and visit a place. Physical Characteristics Landforms (mountains, rivers, etc.), climate, vegetation, wildlife, soil, etc.

HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION How do humans and the environment affect each other? We depend on it. People depend on Lake Lewisville for water and the Gulf of Mexico for transportation. We modify it. People modify our environment by heating and cooling buildings for comfort. We adapt to it. We adapt to the environment by wearing clothing suitable for summer (shorts) and winter (coats), rain and shine.

MOVEMENT How are people, goods, ideas moved from place to place? Human Movement Trucks, Trains, Planes Information Movement Phones, computer (email), mail Idea Movement How do fads move from place to place? TV, Radio, Magazines

REGIONS How are Regions similar to and different from other places? Formal Regions Regions defined by governmental or administrative boundaries (States, Countries, Cities) Regions defined by similar characteristics (Coastal Plains, North Central Plains, Great Plains, Mountains and Basin) Functional Regions Regions defined by a function (newspaper service area, cell phone coverage area). Vernacular Regions Regions defined by peoples perception (middle east, the south, etc.)

MAP TERMINOLOGY: Texas’s Place on the Earth

Finding Locations Latitude – the location north or south of the equator Longitude – the location east or west of the prime meridian │

ABSOLUTE LOCATION DEFINITION : The exact position of a place on the earth using lines of latitude and longitude to describe the location of a place. EXAMPLE - DALLAS IS LOCATED AT 33* N. LATITUDE AND 97* W. LONGITUDE.

RELATIVE LOCATION DEFINITION : The position of a place relative, or in comparison to another place. EXAMPLE – JAKE’S HILLTOP PARK IS LOCATED ACROSS THE STREET FROM LAMAR MIDDLE SCHOOL

Map Symbols/Keys/Titles Every map will have a key or legend that will have symbols and their meanings on it. Looking at the key or legend will help you get a better understanding of the information on the map. Compass Rose will have the cardinal directions on the map oriented you to the North, South, East and West directions on the map. A distance scale will allow you to measure the approximate distance between two locations. The title of the map should also be located at the top or bottom of the map. This will also give you a good clue as to the topic of the map.

POLITICAL MAP DEFINITION: A General Purpose Map that shows boundaries in an area Shows borders, towns, cities, capital and other landmarks

PHYSICAL MAP DEFINITION : A General-Purpose Map that shows the natural features of an area (topography)

Physical-Political Map DEFINITION: A General Purpose Map that shows cities, countries, states, rivers, bays and mountain ranges.

Historical Maps DEFINITION: A Special Purpose Map that shows information from the past such as changes in the political boundaries, where people lived, routes of explorers. etc.

Military Map DEFINITION: A Special Purpose Map that is used in for a specific purpose such as a military mission .

Precipitation Map DEFINITION: A Special Purpose Map that is created for the specific purpose of recording and displaying precipitation across the state.

City Street Map Definition: A Special Purpose Map that is created for the specific purpose of locating addresses and streets in a particular area Lamar Middle School

Population Map DEFINITION: A Special Purpose Map that is created for the specific purpose of displaying the state’s population.

What can you learn from Maps? Weather Forecasts – satellite images Business locations – street maps/city maps Store Locations – mall map What does NAFTA stand for? NAFTA = North American Free Trade Agreement It is trade agreement between the United States, Mexico and Canada that allows those countries o import and export goods quicker and with less paperwork.
