Where is Chiapas? What is it like? Chiapas, Mexico is how far from here? Chiapas is the southern most state in Mexico. Chiapas is the poorest of 32 states in Mexico. The poverty level in Mexico is defined as income less than 2,542 Pesos or $150.07 per month. In comparison, $150.07 would feed a family of 4 in the US for 1 week (according to the USDA 2014 Thrifty Food Plan) Coneval (Mexico government agency) estimated 76.2% of people in Chiapas were living below poverty levels in 2014.
