Why did the United States as a nation expand west from 1800 to 1850? Essential Question Why did the United States as a nation expand west from 1800 to 1850? Why You Should Care Westward Expansion completes the map of the continental US, and it also sets the stage for more problems that lead the country to the Civil War.

Going West NEW MEXICO CALIFORNIA Religious, new start, goooold, going to texas Put 3 or 4 character options (one Mormon, one to texas, one to cali, etc.) and class picks CYOA style which one to do when.

Texas Controlled by Spain for hundreds of years Encouraged settlement by offering cheap land. Dear Americans, Please come live in Texas to protect it from Indians. Sincerely, Mexico

Don’t forget the slaves! Guys, let’s go to Texas! Don’t forget the slaves! Yay, lets go to Texas. Don’t forget the slaves!

Texas When Mexico became independent they added a few demands.

AMERICANS Mexico wants YOU to settle Texas! Cheap Land! White AMERICANS Mexico wants YOU to settle Texas! Cheap Land! *must learn Spanish, become a Mexican citizen, convert to Catholicism and get rid of your slaves *must learn Spanish, become a Mexican citizen, convert to Catholicism and get rid of your slaves

Texas 1000s of settlers came in, many with slaves. Mexico responded by tightening laws and restricting freedoms. The settlers saw this as unfair and decided to fight for independence. The 1st major battle happened at the Alamo.

Also, pay more taxes and you don’t get to vote anymore. Uh, no más, por favor. Also, pay more taxes and you don’t get to vote anymore.

Hello, I’m your new leader. Antonio Lopez De Santa Anna Hello, I’m your new leader. Antonio Lopez De Santa Anna. I think I will also get rid of the Mexican Constitution. Rights are for losers. Hey, that’s not cool man! Stephen austin

NOW I’M REALLY MAD. DON’T MESS WITH TEXAS! Si, sure little friend. We are coming to take back our cannon. Stephen austin

I will end this.

The Alamo Between 200 and 250 Mexican and American Volunteers gathered at the Alamo to stop Santa Anna’s advance. Santa Anna, with about 2,400 men, put the Alamo under siege. Siege- a battle tactic where the enemy is surrounded and prevented from receiving supplies or reinforcements. Davey Crocket William Travis Jim Bowie

I call on you in the name of Liberty, of patriotism, and everything dear to the American character, to come to our aid with all dispatch… VICTORY OR DEATH. William Travis

The Alamo Nearly all of the defenders were killed. “Remember the Alamo!” became a rallying cry. At Goliad more than 300 Texans taken prisoner were executed by Santa Ana. “The clothes of those massacred were stripped off the dead bodies. The women took the clothes to the river and washed out the blood of the men killed, so they could be used by the Mexicans. Eye witnesses, those spared from the massacre, were filling up a water barrel as they watched the river turn red with the blood of their companions.”

The Battle of San Jacinto 630 Mexican soldiers killed, 730 captured versus 9 Texans killed – in 18 minutes! Santa Anna captured the next day. Mexico said they would recognize Texas as an independent country, as long as they didn’t become part of the US. Texas agreed. Texas was then recognized as an independent nation for 9 years (though they hoped they would be annexed into the US) Hah-seen-toe

Boundary Dispute The United States and Mexico could not agree on Texas’s border. Texas claimed the Rio Grande. Mexico claimed the Nueces.

How do you think this boundary dispute will end? The United States will apologize. Mexico will apologize. Texas will apologize. There will be a war. What does this mean?
