Junior Year Journey RHS Class of 2019

Graduation Status Check I know 23 credits are needed for graduation...where do they come from? English—4 Credits Math—4 Credits Science—4 Credits Social Studies—3 Credits Health and Personal Fitness—1 Credit Personal Fitness Waiver?? Career Tech/Fine Arts/ Foreign Language—3 Credits Electives—4 Credits

Oh No!!! What if my student fails a class?? Retention Policy 5 credits needed to be a 10th grader 11 credits needed to be an 11th grader 17 credits needed to be a 12th grader Recovery Options Summer School Online Classes Fulton Virtual School Georgia Virtual School Credit Recovery Learning Lab Keep in mind, credit recovery is not NCAA approved Recovering a class does not make that failing grade disappear from the first attempt. All classes will be on the transcript and averaged into the student’s overall GPA.

Keeping the Peace at Home Junior year can feel like the peak of academic/social stress and anxiety (for both the student and you) AP Exams EOCs Early onset senioritis Extra-curricular activities Finding balance Feeling college-ready SAT ACT PSAT National Merit Qualification

Take a Deep Breath!! It will be okay! I know by now you all have drafted an email to your assigned counselor reading “URGENT—Please Help” in the subject line to schedule a meeting. Stay tuned for Junior Appointments Letters will be mailed home around October with your appointment time.

What Can You Do Now to Prepare? Focus on getting good grades GPA vs Numeric Average Weighted vs. Unweighted Start researching colleges Academic Fit—Safe/Target/Reach Social Fit Financial Fit Develop a list of extra curricular activities Resume Activities Sheet Remember: Quality over Quantity Take your first SAT/ACT/Accuplacer (formally the Compass Exam) Express “Demonstrated Interest” Please Note: RHS does not Rank The #1 factor in most college admissions decisions Extremely important to maximize performance: Stay in close contact with teachers Complete all assignments Attend help sessions Monitor progress in Home Access Center Spending time each night on every academic class Good attendance Being on-time and prepared for class Peer Tutoring

Keeping HOPE Alive! Must finish with a minimum 3.0 GPA in core academic courses (Eng., Math, Sci., Soc. Stud., World Lang. and some Car./Tech). Middle School Grades do not Count for HOPE HOPE subtracts the 7 Honors points we add to Honors/AP/MOWR Then add 0.5 weight to AP/MOWR classes only (not Honors) Won’t go above a 4.0 for any class Academic electives not required for graduation still count towards HOPE GPA (e.g., Spanish 3, AP Psych., etc.) Grades for all attempted academic classes included (even F’s)

Keeping Hope Alive! Zell Miller Scholarship Need a 3.7 GPA in core academic courses Need one of the following qualifying test scores: At least 1200 on SAT (Reading + Math) in one sitting Composite ACT score of at least 26 in one sitting HOPE/Zell Rigor Requirement: Starting with the Class of 2017, students are required to earn 4 credits in courses possessing “academic rigor” May include but not limited to AP/Honors courses Examples: Chemistry, Spanish 3, Algebra II 1) Advanced foreign language courses (includes 2nd year of a language and above); 2) Advanced math, such as CCGPS Advanced Algebra, CCGPS PreCalculus, AMDM or an equivalent or higher course; 3) Advanced science, such as Chemistry, Physics, or an equivalent or higher course; 4) Advanced Placement courses in core subjects (English, math, science, social studies, and foreign language); 5) International Baccalaureate courses in core subjects ; or 6) Courses taken at a unit of the University System of Georgia in core subjects - where such courses are not remedial and developmental courses.
