What are the 5 themes of Geography? M - Movement R - Region H E – Human Environment Interaction L - Location P - Place Why study them? Helps us organize studies of our world Provides a method for things to be analyzed

Location – Has two different types of locations Absolute Location Relative Location Is a specific description EXAMPLE: 706 East Lenoir Street  Raleigh, NC 27601 This is a general description of where something is. EXAMPLE: The United States is North of Mexico

Place Refers to the features that DEFINE an area, NOT where an area is In other words place describes an area in terms of its characteristics What characteristics does the picture have?

Human Environment Interaction An areas ENVIRONMENT includes land, water, climate, plants, and animals. These characteristics of environment greatly IMPACT how humans interact with their environment. How does this picture show Human Environment Interaction?

Movement People constantly move from location to location. Geographers want to know what routes people travel and why they move.

Regions Geographers create regions to compare places.

5 Themes Examples (Written) For each theme you will need two written examples that come in the form of a narrative (personal experience). EXAMPLE: I moved from Seattle, Washington to Southern California. On the trip I noticed that the roads weaved around mountains and dipped into valleys. We were moving because my dad was offered a new job.
