MAIN IDEA As we read Tim Burton’s biographical essay, we will be looking for the main idea. Main idea: Is a statement that summarizes the key details of a text. Is not the same as a text’s subject or the theme. Is a statement that summarizes the important points of a text, usually informational in nature.

Fill in the blanks with your subjects and two adjective phrases to write a main-idea sentence. Adjective phrases: What words describe his style as a director? Use two adjectives that work together to make an adjective phrase. An example of an adjective phrase is “gothic darkness.”

LET’S SEE IF YOU UNDERSTAND Once you have written your main-idea statement, use your notes to write a paragraph to support that statement. This statement is now your topic sentence. Be sure to choose details about Burton and his style that support your topic sentence. Organize the sentences, and use correct grammar.
