Presentation transcript:

WHY? to equip school leavers with the 21st century skills they need to succeed in work and life to ensure school leavers are innovators, entrepreneurs, valued employees, life-long learners, and responsible global citizens. to create multiple ways of entering tertiary institutions to address the increased lack of public confidence in the OP system Government investment in change • $69.4 million allocated to prepare for the new systems.

The Queensland Government will introduce new senior assessment and tertiary entrance systems with Year 11 students in 2019. Key changes: introduce common external assessment strengthen the quality and comparability of school-based assessment replace the Overall Position (OP) with the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).

Benefits of the new system The changes will help to strengthen the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) Greater alignment between Australian curriculum (Junior school) and the new Senior assessment and tertiary entrance (Senior school) Increased public confidence and transparency

Curriculum Current Queensland Certificaducatio9 the QCE: • These subjects and programs will count towards the QCE: –– General subjects –– General extension subjects –– Applied subjects –– Short courses –– Recognised studies –– VET courses • Students will typically undertake the equivalent of six subjects.

Assessment in Year 11 and 12 • Combine school-based and external assessment to derive final subject results. • Four assessments (3 school-based + 1 external) per subject. • School-based assessment will generally contribute 75% to a student’s final subject result; 50% in maths and science. • QCAA will endorse and confirm school-based assessments; and ratify subject results. Students will receive a numerical and A–E final subject result (A–E only for applied subjects).

Tertiary Entrance • QTAC responsible for tertiary entrance from 2020 • ATAR will replace the OP • Students must satisfactorily complete an English subject (Sound Achievement) to be ATAR-eligible • English will only count if it is one of a student’s best five subject results • ATARs to be calculated from a student’s best 5 subject results At least 4 General subjects + 1 other. One of which may be: – a VET Cert III or above, or – an applied subject result

We are a school of multiple pathways University bound = ATAR Unsure of work or Uni = ATAR + VET qualification Want to work/trade = ATAR ineligible – Applied subjects & VET qualification Tertiary institutions may still give considerations towards certificate level qualifications in regards to tertiary entrance

Preparations at North Actions in place: Review of subject offerings for 2019 Rollout of Australian curriculum subjects from grade 7 to 10 Staff professional development - extensive Continuing to develop and strengthen our teaching and learning processes – growing the emphasis on student learning (focusing on individual progress).

Subject Selection Process All students have a subject selection form Next Tuesday – students complete selections online Use Subject selection booklet – on website/ ask teachers/discuss with parents and teachers Students should select subjects they enjoy, are good at and will help link to future pathways.
