Lab Safety Rules

Dress Code: Students must: Wear safety goggles when working with chemicals, burners or any substance that might get into your eyes Wear a laboratory apron when working with chemicals or heated lab equipment Keep hair pulled back away from chemicals, burners or other lab equipment

General Safety Rules Read your lab directions BEFORE you ask for help NEVER perform lab “experiments” without your teachers permission Spills are reported IMMEDIATELY to your teacher NEVER pour chemicals down the sink unless directed to do so.

General Safety Lab Rules (cont.) NEVER EAT at the lab stations or anywhere else in the room. Wash your hands BEFORE you leave and especially before LUNCH!

First Aid in the laboratory Immediately report all accidents to your teachers Rinse acid on your skin with lots of water (15 min. minimum) Know where the fire extinguisher, blanket and eye wash are in the room Where is the nearest shower? All fires are immediately reported to your teacher

Heating and Fire Safety Acceptable heat sources area: Bunsen burners Hot plates Never heat chemicals unless directed to by your teacher Always point a test tube away from you and others Keep your lab station/sinks clean

Heating and Fire Safety (cont.) Never heat a liquid in a closed container When picking up heated glassware use gloves or tongs

Chemical Safety Never “mix” chemicals for the “fun of it” Never touch, taste or smell chemicals unless instructed by your teacher Use only the chemicals you need, keep lids closed, and NEVER return used chemicals to its original container

Chemical Safety When diluting acids, pour Acid into Water Pour chemicals OVER the sink to avoid spills Immediately rinse acid or bases that get on your skin with lots of water – NOTIFY your teacher ALL acid or base clean- ups need to be done under the instruction of your teacher

Glassware Safety Always use a wire screen when heating glassware with a flame Glassware does NOT appear hot – always check for heat with the back of your hand before picking up! All chipped or broken glass should be reported to your teacher and placed in a proper trash container Never eat or drink from our glassware

Lab Cleanup It is your responsibility to: Clean up all lab supplies Clean out the sink Wipe down the lab station Return appropriate equipment to the cleaning area when directed

Consequences: Inappropriate Behavior: Warning Removal from lab and seat assignment Referral and loss of lab privileges Conference with AP and parent Permanent loss of lab privileges AND all field trips If we can not trust you in the lab we will NOT trust you on a field trip!
