Second Generation of Titans

Atlas Titan God of endurance God of astronomy He surpassed all others by mastering astrology and was the first to discover the spherical nature of the world One of 4 sons of Iapetus and Oceanid Atlas (unlike his brothers Prometheus and Epimetheus) sided with the Titans along with is other brother Menoetius Punished by Zeus did not send him to Tartarus but sentenced him to hold the axis between heavens and earth apart – so Gaea and Uranus couldn’t have more kids

Atlas’ role in the war Cronus made Atlas their leader because of his war skills and his leadership skils He was pretty good at it In the end they were outnumbered and lost Because he had strong endurance, Zeus sentenced him to his own special punishment To be the caretaker of the axis between heaven and earth Zeus believed that the weight of the universe would weigh him down so much that he would not be able to focus on anything else

Eos Goddess of Dawn She is the one who raises the sun Symbol of hope and rejuvenation to all living and mortal beings as they woke up in the morning filled with energy Daughter of Hyperion and Theia Some authors don’t consider her a goddess and use her as a way of explaining the movement of the stars

EOS (Cont…) Mother of the winds and planets Had an affair with her cousin Astraeus They gave birth to many of the planets Venus Decided to have an affair with Ares…Aphrodite was less than pleased with this so she cursed Eos to be perpetually in love

EOS (One More time) Because of this spell, Eos had many affairs with mortal men Tithonus (prince of troy) = Memnon Memnon became king of the Ethiopians and one of the heroes of the Trojan war Eos wanted Tithonus to become immortal like her, so she went to Zeus He granted this but she didn’t ask for eternal youth, so he got old She still loved him, but thought he was gross so she only nurtured him as he got old Once he got old and shriveled, all he did was babble on for eternity Cephalus She tricked him into being with her He was already married and didn’t want to cheat on his wife He went to Artemis (Goddess of war) She game him a spear that could not miss its target One day while hunting, Eos hid in the woods. When Cephalus heard something, he threw the spear thinking it was an animal, but it was his wife  They had a son Phaethon

Still Eos Supported the Trojans because of her son Memnon Trojan War Supported the Trojans because of her son Memnon Eos misguided the spears meant for her son and he lived to battle with Achilles The battle with Achilles overshadowed all other battles of the Trojan war Achilles defeated Memnon and when Memnon died, Eos mourned and darkened the world The gods gathered all the bodies and turned them into a river that was extremely fertile, but once a year would turn to blood in honor of Memnon Zeus granted Eos’ plea to have her son buried and Eos turned the Ethiopians into birds to fly over his dead body

Epimetheus Titan god of afterthought Son of Iapetus and Clymene Aka the god of excuses Son of Iapetus and Clymene 3 brothers – The most famous being Prometheus Epimetheus was tasked with creating all animals on earth He was supposed to give all animals a positive trait He used all the positive traits for the animals and didn’t leave anything for Prometheus or the humans And of course because he didn’t think things through, all the animals eventually turned on him

Epimetheus and Pandora Pandora was supposed to become Epimetheus’ wife and bring about misfortune on man and animals Hephaestus created Pandora on the orders of Zeus, who wanted revenge on Epimetheus and Prometheus and their creation. Each God gave Pandora a gift Aphrodite=beauty Hermese = cunning mind and crafty tongue Athena=clothes and how to work with her hands Poseidon = pearl necklace that kept her from drowning Apollo = taught her her music Hera=curiosity Prometheus warned his brother not to marry Pandora but Epimetheus didn’t listen

E&P Zeus gave Epimetheus and Pandora a box as a wedding gift E&P had 1 daughter – Pyrrha who married Deucalion (they were charged with repopulating the earth after the flood). They threw rocks behind their shoulders to recreated mankind Opening Pandora’s box Pandora really wanted to open the box – her curiosity got the best of her All negative traits escaped from the box (greed, envy, pain, illness, etc…) There would be more but E&P managed to shut the box They opened the box once more to release hope

Helios Titan god of the sun and sunlight According to some, he was worshiped and admired as much as Zeus because he brought life through light He is often depicted riding in his famous golden chariot drawn by 4 horses Sometimes he let his sibs use it. He is in many myths Particularly the one where he and Hecate heard the screams of Persephone after being abducted by Hades With the help of Hephaestus he set a trap for Aphrodite and Ares And many others

Leto Goddess of modesty and kindness Described as the gentlest in all Olympus Although she is also described as having a short temper She is also associated with childbirth since most myths involve the birth of her children Leto was impregnated by Zeus Hera found out and she came for Leto She threatened any island that she came to so that Leto couldn’t take refuge anywhere She was forced to constantly wander the three realms to escape Hera (earth, sea, heavens)

Prometheus Titan God of Forethought Called the champion of mankind because he created them with water and clay But others say that the gods created man and Prometheus and Epmetheus were supposed to give them traits Famous for stealing the fire of the gods and giving it to man Chained to the rock of Caucasus for stealing the fire
