Please write down: 3 things you want to learn as we transition into our unit on Astronomy. 2 things you already know about Astronomy. 1 thing you know about Astrology. This bar timer, will start when anywhere on the slide is clicked. The bar will move from left to right and the word ‘End’ will appear at the end, accompanied by a ‘Deep Gong’ sound. It is possible to change the duration of this timer to any time, by entering the animation settings, and changing the timing for ‘rectangle 3’. Note the time has to be entered as a number of seconds – so if you want 2mins & 30secs – this is entered as 150 (60X2 + 30 = 150). End

The Sun-Earth-Moon System Chapter 28 The Sun-Earth-Moon System

Electromagnetic Spectrum Arrangement of electromagnetic radiation according to its wavelength. Also known as EMS

Electromagnetic Radiation Electromagnetic radiation travels at a speed of 300 000 km/s; or 180,000 mi/s; or 6.48 x 1008 mi/hr; or 5.68 x 1012 mi/yr. Also known as the speed of light or “c”. E=mc2

Optical Telescopes Device used to detect Visible Light wavelengths of radiation from distant objects Collects/Gathers light to a focal point Refracting Reflecting

Refracting telescope Objective is a CONVEX LENS. Focal Point

Reflecting telescope Objective is a CONCAVE MIRROR. Focal Point

Compare

Radio Telescopes (Radio Astronomy) Used to detect radio waves traveling through space Works like a Reflecting Optical Telescope

Arecebo, Puerto Rico

VLA, New Mexico Interferometry Process of linking separate telescopes together so they act as a single telescope.

Tools of Astronomy Section Assessment 1. What is the difference between a reflecting and a refracting telescope? A reflecting telescope brings visible light to a focus using lenses, while a refracting telescope uses mirrors.

Tools of Astronomy Section Assessment 2. What are the categories of electromagnetic radiation? Electromagnetic radiation includes visible light, infrared and ultraviolet radiation, radio waves, microwaves, X rays, and gamma rays.

Stellar scintillation or Atmospheric seeing

Hubble Telescope Space observation Telescope that orbits the earth Reflecting optical telescope Also has x-ray and infrared attachments.

Light Pollution

Where would you want to be to see stars?

Space Exploration Satellite Space probe Any object that is orbiting or revolving around another object. Can be natural or man-made. Space probe An instrument that is sent out of an earth orbit to gather information and then sends that info back to earth. Can become a satellite.

Space Travel Rockets Space Shuttle

Space Shuttle Rocket

Sputnik First Object in space. Launched October 4, 1957 by the former USSR. The size of a basketball and about 183 pounds. U.S. answers with Explorer satellite

Race For Space 1959 President Kennedy in an address to the nation proclaims that the U.S. will successfully send man to the moon and safely return them by the end of the decade. Billions of dollars is allocated toward Science education and technology.

Project Mercury Yuri Gargaran = 1st man (Russian) in Space First U.S. manned space missions to put man in Space. Alan Shepard = 1st U.S. Astronaut to space John Glenn = 1st U.S. Astronaut to orbit the Earth.

Project Gemini The second step in getting to the moon. Major accomplishments First space walk. Linked two spacecraft together while in orbit.

Project Apollo The moon missions. Apollo 1—three astronauts die in a fire on the launch pad. Apollo 11 the first manned spacecraft to land on the moon on July 20, 1969. Neil Armstrong. Last time we stepped on moon—Apollo 17 on December 11, 1972.

Viking Missions Viking 1 launched August 20, 1975 and Viking 2 launched on September 9, 1975 Arrival: June 19, 1976 (Viking 1); August 7, 1976 (Viking 2) Each one had an orbiter and a Lander. First to land on another planet—Mars.

Voyager 1 & 2 Voyager 2 was launched August 20, 1977 followed by the launch of Voyager 1 sixteen days later on September 5, 1977 . Both went to Jupiter and Saturn Voyager 2 continued on to Uranus and Neptune.

Magellan Launched May 4, 1989, and arrived at Venus on August 10, 1990 Mission was to map the surface of Venus. Mapped 98% of the entire surface.

Galileo Launched October 18, 1989. First deep space probe to be launched by a space shuttle. Galileo arrived at Jupiter in December 1995. Released a probe into Jupiter to test its atmosphere. Gathered info about the moons.

Pathfinder Landed on Mars1997 Robotic probe sent to Mars Proved that there were innovative ways to land on Mars and that a rover could be deployed

Spirit and Opportunity Landed on Mars in 2004 Did series of test on Mars in two separate location to determine if water existed on Mars and if it still does today. Ultimately is looking for evidence of life on Mars.

On January 28, 1986, the shuttle orbiter Challenger and its seven-member crew were lost 73 seconds after launch. On Feburary 1, 2003 at 8:59 a.m. the space shuttle Columbia is lost over Texas during re-entry.

Tools of Astronomy Section Assessment 3. Identify whether the following statements are true or false. ______ Electromagnetic radiation travels at different speeds that are determined by wavelength. ______ When applying interferometry, the detail of the images produced improves as the distance between telescopes increases. ______ The Hubble Space Telescope is able to observe X rays. ______ More than 1400 spinoffs using NASA technologies exist. false true
