Agenda: Why WatchD.O.G.S. at Bailey Elementary? How often can I volunteer? What time should I get here? What do I do when I get to the classroom? How do I get a background check? Safety tips. End of the day check out.

Why WatchD.O.G.S. at Bailey Elementary? Fathers and Father Figures will be used interchangeably. Fathers are critically important yet rarely have the opportunity to volunteer at school. Kids love to have men around at school as role models. More eyes at school means increased security. Fathers can learn how school is different now than when they were in school. Fathers can see their kids in a different environment. Kids enjoy having their fathers at school and are proud of them when they volunteer. Teachers can build relationships with fathers to increase communication to and from school. Fathers can see what kids are learning so they can better help them at home. Girls especially need father figures in their lives. Fathers can take a day off of work.

How often can I volunteer? As much as you like. Sign up on the paper calendar in the hallway. Suggestions are your child’s birthday or some special day that you choose. You can sign up for as many days as you want. You can sign up for more days at any time. What time should I get here? Arrive by 8:45am so that you can check in at the office and get an idea of your schedule for the day. Our school day goes from 9:00am until 3:35pm.

What do I do when I arrive at school? Check in at the office at 8:45am and let them know you are a WatchDOG for the day. Get your badge and a 2 way radio. Set it to channel 3. Go outside and greet students until 9:05am. Either at the front or at the side (car drop off). Return to the main office for announcements. Join in the announcements and introduce yourself as so-and-so’s dad and a WatchDOG for the day. Students run the announcements and will let you know what to do. Travel to your first classroom (typically your child’s class) and begin to volunteer. Your child’s teacher will tell you what to do. Stay as long as you wish. Return to the cafeteria or the office for another assignment. You may be contacted via radio to volunteer in another classroom. If you do not have a specific classroom to work in, proceed to a go-to classroom. The list will be in the office. 11:00am- 1:30pm- lunch and recess. This is a good time to have your photo taken. 1:30pm-3:30pm repeat the morning routine or volunteer in a go-to classroom. 3:30pm visit the main office to return your radio and complete the optional survey.

What might I do when I get to the classroom? -Read with students or ask them about their reading -Help students with math facts -Help students with computer projects -Monitor lunch or recess duty -Greet students as they enter and exit the building. -Play word study games with students on Wacky Words Wednesdays -Give students feedback on their writing -Assist/participate in morning choices (creativity challenges, STEAM challenges) -Have students read poems from poetry notebooks (kindergarten) -Sight Word Games (kindergarten) -Math Games (Investigations games) -Exchange out books-in-a-bag -Read with with students from books-in-a-bag -Be outside during recess to interact with the kids and possibly lead group games. Ex: kickball, soccer, football.

How do I get a background check? Dublin City Schools Website- directions are on the handout when you leave tonight. It’s free It takes 5 minutes It lasts 5 years. How do I get my WatchDOG shirt and other gear? Order forms will be on the handout when you leave tonight- order online and have your goods delivered right to your house.

Safety Tips: Stay in open areas when working with students. Working in a group of 2 or 3 is better than working 1:1. Working with students when a teacher is present is best. Exercise an appropriate sense of humor with kids. Respect boundaries. Accept hugs but don’t offer them. High fives and fist bumps are great. Never take a student off site without approval. Eating lunch with students is fine, just don’t share food due to allergies. Respect the teacher’s rules. Never discipline somebody else’s kid. Seek assistance from the office if there is a situation. Be Kind, Be Respectful, and Follow Directions the First Time.

Finally: Have your photo taken before you leave when you volunteer!! Help supervise dismissal. Return your radio to the office before you leave. Complete the End of the Day survey! Now………..

Thank you for being a WatchDOG! Go enjoy some PIZZA!!!
