Dudley Worcestershire Abraham Darby the I Abraham Darby the I was born in Dudley, Worcestershire, England in 1677 his dad was a tenant farmer. Darby took a trip to Holland in 1704 He became interested in using cast iron instead of brass in the manufacturing of items such as pots and other wares Darby began to think about an iron smelting operation that would incorporate coke rather than coal Dudley Worcestershire

In 1708 Darcy had successfully refined his process to smelt iron and sand, and took a patent on the process. Pots and other iron wares could be sold to people at lower prices since the process and the materials were less costly than creating brass wares. Darby demonstrated that using coke instead of coal to produce iron was a more cost efficient method, since larger furnaces could be used Key terms:

Thomas Newcomen Thomas Newcomen was born in Dartmouth, Devon in 1663. He made himself as an iron monger in his home town. He created the steam engine for pumping water He combined the ideas of Thomas Savery and Dennis Papin. The Newcomen engine survived for a very long period of time He was an English inventor

Thomas Savery created the first steam engine, but Thomas Newcomen got permission to make a copy of the steam engine for himself. Thomas Newcomen improved the steam engine profoundly from the original
