Sail Training is a challenging and fun way to develop self confidence and change lives DSP is a Sail Training charity. We are a member of the Association of Sail Training Organisations (ASTO) who define Sail Training as a challenging and fun way to develop self confidence and change lives. We offer everyone the chance to experience life onboard large offshore sailing yachts *

Alexander Fairey 34ft Fully equipped training yacht 8 in total Newest addition to our fleet - Bought with money donated by the Alexander Fairey Memorial Trust DSP was selected by the Alexander Fairey Memorial Trust to receive this money due to our reputation for providing young people with excellent Sail Training experiences 34ft but accommodates 8 people Fully equipped. Due to its size it is ideal for younger trainees to get real hands on experience or for more experienced trainees to take increasing responsibility for running the yacht *

Typical Weekend Voyage 1. Join Friday evening 2. Saturday morning set sail for the Solent 3. Sail to a port 4. Free time and dinner Our base Join on Friday evening Receive a safety briefing Issued lifejackets and waterproofs Attempt to get an early night! Set sail on Saturday Familiarisation with equipment on board Hands on learning Use skills to sail to port - location will be weather and tide dependent Sometimes we stay local – Visit Lymington, Yarmouth or Cowes. Other times we go out passed the Needles to Weymouth or Poole When we get in there is a chance to do some rowing or maybe have a BBQ. We find the Crew are usually keen to learn some theory such as new knots, some basic navigation or parts of the boat – all of which can be used to hold an interboat quiz where we usually see great rivalry between boats (in-particular between Skippers!) *

Sunday Breakfast and shore leave Sailing in the Solent, using skills to head back to the Marina 1500 Disembark from Yacht 1600 Depart from Marina On Sunday it’s the Crews chance to put their skills into action again as they take increasing responsibility for the running of the yacht Offer the chance for young people to lead some of the evolutions / activities onboard Aim to leave the Yacht at 3pm so the group can clear the marina by 4pm which gives the group plenty of time to get back to their base at a reasonable time on Sunday evening. *

To be replaced by Seamanship Stages 1,2 & 3 Badges and Awards…… We offer a diverse and interesting way of gaining badges and awards The majority of what we do mirrors the activities necessary to gain some Scouting and explorer badges and awards. Yachting now plays a more prominent role than before through the Adventure Challenge (which will be replaced by Seamanship Stages 1, 2, and 3) To be replaced by Seamanship Stages 1,2 & 3 *

Explorer Badges and Awards.... To be replaced by Seamanship Stages 4 & 5 Again our programme offers Explorer opportunities to gain badges and awards Due to our knowledge of the required skills and our ability to lead RYA courses we are in a very good position to offer activities that otherwise leaders may find difficult to provide We are able to offer elements of the Chief Scouts Platinum and Diamond Awards such as the Nights Away and the Expeditions *

SAFETY Supervision Lifejacket Harness Marine Coastguard Agency Code of Practice First Aiders SUPERVISION: Safety is paramount on board and our afterguard are highly trained and used to training and supervising young people. All our Skippers, Mates and Senior Watch Leaders are CRB checked. LIFEJACKET HARNESSES Lifejacket harnesses are worn at all times except at the absolute discretion of the Skipper. Each individual is issued their own which is fitted prior to leaving at the start of the voyage and remains with them for the duration of the trip. The crew are fully briefed on how to use their lifejacket in the safety brief. MCA CODE OF PRACTICE Skippers and Mates are qualified to exacting standards laid down by the RYA and Maritime and Coastguard Agency. Regular familiarisations of the vessels, together with constant assessment, ensure that our afterguard maintain the high standards we expect. Each vessel fully equipped with safety equipment including modern navigational equipment such GPS Navigation Aids, MF and VHF Radios, Radar, emergency flares and signalling equipment, self-inflating life rafts, Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons and fire fighting equipment FIRST AIDERS First Aiders – Each vessel carries one or more qualified first aiders for normal voyages. When operating a greater distance from shore the Skipper will carry a Medical Proficiency at Sea qualification. *

Further Opportunities If you enjoy your time on board there are opportunities to stay involved. A number of our Skippers started like you today – having been told about DSP they came for a voyage as a trainee and enjoyed it so much they came back for more as a Watch Leader, before gaining the skills and qualifications they needed to become a Mate and then a Skipper. *

1. Watch Leader Scheme Develop skills further Sail regularly Meet new people Work your way up We are always on the look out for potential Skippers and Mates of the future. After your voyage you may be invited to join the Sailing project to be trained as a watch leader. This is the first step on the ‘afterguard ladder’. This role involves leading the crew through the important evolutions on board such as hoisting sails, reefing the main sail or making tea. Most of our Watch Leaders had no prior sailing experience other than their time with DSP so they are given lots of opportunities to develop their skills. The social side of being a watch leader is very important and we encourage this by organising special events. This year in addition to their sailing we have organised a Watch Leader trip to Thorpe Park and a Sail repair workshop run by specialist sail makers. These young people now have the opportunity to work their way up to becoming our future Skippers – you could be one of them. *

2. International Tall Ships’ Races Annual event Race against the worlds largest sailing vessels Chance to travel Parades and parties Each year the project enters the International Tall Ships Race which is attended by thousands of young people each year from around 30 countries. This combines a truly competitive event where we race against the world’s largest and most impressive sailing vessels The race series also provides the chance to sail in many different geographical areas. We’ll tell you about this years race in a few minutes. The organisers of the Tall Ships Race organise well managed crew parties, and a spectacular crew parade is held to thank the host port for their hospitality. These offer the chance to meet and socialise with people from a variety of nationalities. *

3. The Duke of Edinburgh Award Skills Service Longer voyages can be used for Residential DSP is an access organisation for the D of E We offer opportunities for completing the Skills and Service sections. We have taken plenty of individuals away for the residential element *

A structured programme of recognised qualifications The project is an RYA training centre and offer a structured programme of recognised qualifications. In addition to the badges and awards available for Scouts and Explorers we are able to deliver the RYA Competent Crew qualification on longer trips as well as the theory and shore based Day Skipper courses.
