Sphere of Influence: A region dominated and controlled by an outside power. Social Darwinism: The belief held by some in the late 19th century that certain nations and races were superior to others and therefore destined to rule over them.
Please copy the following definitions in your vocabulary notebook: 4) Insurrection: An armed rebellion of some sort. 5) U.S.S. Maine: American war ship sunk by unknown means and used by the yellow press as a justification for the war with Spain. 6) Yellow Journalism: Newspapers that used sensational headlines and exaggerated stories in order to promote readership. 7) Rough Riders: Group of men, consisting of rugged westerners and upper-class easterners who fought during the Spanish- American War. This group was organized by Theodore Roosevelt.
